The loss of the VIU CDA program would be a major loss to the dental profession. We are seeing much too often DA's/Chairside working in place of licensed professionals. Far too many dentists are bringing in out of country staff and training them but not licensing them. This is further taking jobs that Canadians/British Columbians should have the opportunity to fill. We need to maintain the high standards of BC dental, VIU is a part of this control. I support licensed, well trained professionals. Please do not dissolve this program. Mag Grant RDH
I am a CDA that achieved my certification at VIU( at my time it was Malaspina). I’m finding that I have to put in extra shifts because my boss is unable to find help. I’m a mother of and I can’t be committed to full time employment. Please keep the program going, we have a shortage!!!
This just absolutely cannot happen. VIU is essential in populating our local and national CDA pool. If we lose our mid Vancouver island teaching facility it is no doubt that people will chose other, more accessible professions.
We are facing massive shortages in dental professionals already. A dental office cannot survive without certified dental assistants. They are essential in every step of providing dental care. Uncertified dental assistants do not have the scope of practice to contribute like a CDA does. If this program is taken away and as a community we loose the ability to efficiently care of our population we all suffer. Please keep this program running.

My niece took your dental assistant course and is thriving in the dental industry. So much so she is now venturing into new territories of doing myofacial therapy along side dentists. This VIU course was the springboard into changing lives & extremely valuable to our communities
Vancouver Island, and all of BC, is desperate for certified dental assistants. If assistants have to leave for their education, they probably won't come back. Losing the assistants in dental would be like losing the nurses in hospitals.
Certified dental assistants are extremely valuable to the dental office and dental profession. Their knowledge and skills are not replaceable by chairside assistants. We are noticing and experiencing alot of poor hiring across the island. Offices are not putting the true time and training into these non Certified hires and allowing them to go above and beyond their designated duties put out by the college. The island is fed by VIU CDA graduates and now than ever CDAs are in great need.
