Wrestling instilled a tremendous amount of confidence in me in such a short amount of time, and it should be an experience every woman beyond high school should have. This sport is something that should continue to grow, especially with the increasing number of girls joining and the ever so rising interest in it.
As a girl who grew up in a house where women were meant to be quiet and docile, I wasn't able to observe wrestling in action until high school. After that, it wasn't until my junior year when I finally gained the confidence to try it for myself. This sport has been revolutionary to my growth. I've gained an absurd amount of drive, passion, and confidence. The opportunity to continue my journey into college couple be exactly what I need to set me up for success in the future. I love this sport, and I don't want it to end after high school.
As a Maryland High School Wrestling Coach, I have seen the growth of Women's Wrestling in our ranks. It is only fitting that our largest state university become fearless in their leadership by providing a D1 program for our Young Women to aspire to be a part of. Stop letting our Young Women leave the state for opportunities that we can provide for them here at UMD!
As a former University of Maryland alumnus, I strongly advocate for the University to prioritize the equal access of its student body to sports opportunities, particularly in the case of Women’s Wrestling. While this may be a novel initiative, it would significantly enhance the institution’s reputation and commitment to female athletes. Historically, athletic teams have been predominantly designed for men, reflecting outdated societal perceptions of women in sports. However, this outdated notion must be challenged by expanding the availability of sports that are traditionally male-dominated to women. Engaging in athletics not only promotes physical well-being but also fosters positive mental wellbeing among students. I firmly believe that this initiative will contribute to the overall improvement of the university and provide new opportunities for its students, which is the core purpose of higher education.
Let UMD be one of the first schools to add to the very small list of D1 schools. They've seen the ladies come to practice and UMD coaches have worked with us throughout the years at our wrestling clubs. Our ability is NO secret nor is it a joke!!! How good it would be if I and other girls were guaranteed the opportunity to compete going into college while still pursuing a great education.
Within my surroundings, I was the only female wrestling fan as a kid. I grew up watching women continuously breaking barriers in the wrestling world, and I would love to see UMD incorporate a D1 Women’s Wrestling Team!
I’m a sophomore in college who’s been wrestling since high school; at my college I’m not even allowed to compete in club wrestling, so I would love for a D1 program to reach our strong women nearby! Wrestling has helped me gain strength, confidence, and a wide variety of meaningful experiences that should be made available at the D1 level for everybody.
