I wish the world would pause and notice how it is destroying the order around it. Eritrea has committed crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes in Tigray. How is it appropriate for Eritrea to receive rewards rather than face justice? Learning from our past history, we should not support those who are destroying the order of the world.
The recent appointment of Eritrea’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Ms. Sofia Tesfamariam, as one of the Vice Presidents of UNICEF’s Board is deeply concerning. Her history of insensitive remarks, particularly about refugees who tragically drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, is not only contradictory to the values and mission of the UNICEF but also deeply disrespectful to the victims and their families.
The UNICEF's mission is to protect and advocate for displaced and vulnerable populations, and its leadership should embody compassion, empathy, and a genuine commitment to these ideals. Appointing someone with such a troubling track record risks undermining the credibility and effectiveness of the organization.
This decision warrants serious reconsideration to ensure the UNICEF remains a symbol of hope and advocacy for those it serves.
I am deeply shocked to learn that Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam, Permanent Representative of the State of Eritrea to the United Nations, has been appointed Vice President of the Executive Board Bureau of UNICEF. Ambassador Tesfamariam has long been a staunch defender of the Eritrean regime, a dictatorship responsible for systematic human rights violations, including the imprisonment, torture, and deaths of countless individuals, with devastating impacts on children.
It is incomprehensible that someone who has consistently supported such oppression could now hold a leadership position in a United Nations agency tasked with safeguarding the rights and welfare of children globally. UNICEF’s mission, grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, is to protect every child, regardless of background, and to ensure they grow up in freedom, safety, and dignity.
Eritrea’s appalling track record regarding children’s rights is well-documented. Young people are forcibly conscripted into military service, often indefinitely, effectively robbing them of their childhoods and futures. Tens of thousands of children and youth flee Eritrea each year, risking everything for the chance to live in freedom—an undeniable indicator of the country’s failure to protect its most vulnerable.
This appointment not only undermines UNICEF’s credibility but also betrays the very principles it stands for. I urge UNICEF to rescind this nomination immediately and ensure its leadership reflects its unwavering commitment to children’s rights and well-being.
I'm a medical doctor who worked as a physician in my home country Eritrea between 2009 to 2011. During my practice a physician i have witnessed Eritrean children suffering from hunger and famine related lack of adequate food and nutritional deficiency as most of the fathers of those children we were treating them for malnutrition were in endless military conscription aka national service. During my practice at Orotta pediatric national hospital, Mendeferea regional hospital, Decemhare district hospital and Tessenia district hospital i have witnessed the death and suffering of thousands of Eritrean children under the dictator regime in Eritrea. In 2009 there were check points all over the country blocking the Eritrean people from carrying food items from one place to other place, then the people started to transfer it from place to place baked or in the form of dough, then dictator Isaias Afeworki was making fun of that on Eri-TV at the same time denying the presence of hunger and insulting the international community, United Nations Agencies like FOA, UNDIP and UNICEF who want to help the Eritrean people but the dictator telling them go and help for those our neighboring countries who are requesting your help and denied the presence of hunger, famine and malnutrition while thousands of Eritrean children were dying because of malnutrition and tens of thousands were suffering from malnutrition due the famine exacerbated by the dictator regime, in September 2009 was the worst, I remember during weekends 2 children were sleeping on one bed especially in ward C at Orotta pediatric national hospital, at the national level Tessenia was the worst hit, the whole pediatric ward and the corridor was full of malnutrition children. It's very sad to see now Ms. Sofia Tesfamiariam who is the agent of the Eritrean dictator to represent Sub-Sahara Africa as UNICEF vice-president, it's against the values of UNICEF and United Nations, it's shame for Africans and humanity to be represented by such puppet of the worst dictator in our planet. I'm willing to give my testimony about the Eritrean children suffering and death secondary to man made famine, malnutrition in Eritrea during my practice in my home country Eritrea. Fun fact when I was in Eritrea working as I doctor i don't have my own sim card, I have to ask an elderly family member to register a sim card for me as I wasn't allowed by the dictatorial regime me as a young physician like any Eritrean youth under the National service i was not allowed to hold sim card! To my surprise when I left my country and started to work as a physician

The Eritrean people are treated subhumanlly and suffering and suppressed by this dictator regime and Ms. Sofia Tesfamiaraim is part of the regime suffocating the Eritrean people. She isn't fit and she doesn't have integrity and moral obligations to lead UNICEF.
