I lived off of 7th street just south of Indian School about 15 years ago and the rush hour lanes were terrifying then, so I can only imagine how bad it is now with the population increase of the past decade.

Rush hour reverse lanes might have been helpful at some point but today, they’re confusing to a lot of drivers and very dangerous. Living and working around 7th Avenue and 7th Street for nearly 20 years, I’ve seen the results of several reverse lane accidents. Additionally, I’d say that I see three to five incidents of drivers being confused about using the reverse lanes and close calls, weekly. It’s time to end reverse lanes in Phoenix.

This is dangerous and confusing. When I first moved here, I almost got in a head-on collision because I was unfamiliar with reverse lanes.

From the day I came to look at my home in 2009 in Coronado neighborhood to just today, head-on collisions are a risk and near misses occur constantly. Please end this danger to visitors and especially us local residence. That goes for seventh Avenue as well.

I live in a neighborhood that has suicide lanes during peak hours. I have seen more accidents and crazy near misses than anywhere else in the Valley within a small geographic area. Recently, on a short drive home during this 'time', I saw 2 accidents occur right in front of me, and 2 incredibly scary near misses. It is outside the norm to use these lanes for temporary one-way traffic, and people simply do not remember to use them correctly. It doesn't matter if there are signs. What matters is that it is a busy time, people are in a hurry, distracted, and frankly do not see or pay attention to them. Many people are not from the area as well and it catches them by surprise. I would rather save lives and prevent serious injury than open up one lane for a couple hours a day. The downtown area is primarily condos, apartments, university and nightlife now. We simply do not need them or want them and it is creating a dangerous situation for all — especially those who depend on these roads to arrive home safely every day. Thank you.

I have been in Phoenix my whole life and have always been against these reverse lanes--they are unnecessary, confusing, and stressful at best, while I have seen how dangerous and bad for businesses they are, with so many people not using them properly anyway!

I live just off 7th Street north of Northern. Hardly a day goes by that there isn't a face off or worse at the intersection of 7th St and Northern, or people blatantly ignoring the no left turn during the restricted hours. It's bad enough that people do not brake for yellow, but the reverse lanes add to the traffic danger and frustration. I hate them.

I live off 7th St & Montebello and use it daily to get to work and the gym on Camelback. The bottom line is that these lanes do not even exist unless you live in the area and are familiar with them. Complete ignorance from any "newbie" - and rightly so. It exists nowhere else and streets are not adequately signed for "newbies" driving the 7s to understand the rules. I hear bad accidents from my backyard. I see cars in the reverse turn lanes during rush hours all the time. (Motorcyclists are particularly affected). I frequently turn left off Montebello to 7th St. When Culinary Dropout valets their cars at Heldt Lumber during reverse lane hours in the evening - it is utterly blind - you cannot see the near right lane as cars are speeding toward you. I've heard bad accidents from my backyard and seen others traveling the 7s. When I drive home from the gym in the morning (rush hour), I have to signal 3 blocks in advance and tap my brakes multiple times to ensure cars bend don't roll up and rear end me as I stop in traffic to turn left. I'll trade a few extra minutes for my commutes for fewer Phoenicians getting injured or dying - or even thinking it will happen every time they turn left. Let's save the $17+ million for any new signage and just take the existing ones down - in a few hours time with an existing Public Works crew the problem is solved. Let's free up our scarce police and fire crews from avoidable accidents and use the money instead to address the more obvious issues in the 7s & Central corridor like the homeless.

It doesn't matter if 100% of drivers understand and follow the rules of the reverse lanes. At the end of the day, the reverse lanes take a traffic congestion "solution" and spread the burden into beautiful communities that are starving for walkable, bikeable, livable neighborhoods. I feel for your commute, I really do(I too, am stuck in traffic with you). But we need to stop prioritizing the needs of traffic over the needs of community. We need safer solutions that encourage bridges between neighborhoods, not mini-highways that divide them. For the arguably marginal improvement to commute times these lanes provide, they do 10x the harm.

I avoid these streets like the plague. It is such a pain when you can’t even turn for miles. I think maybe the only reason these appear to work is because so many people like me just prefer to avoid them altogether. That’s not efficiency. When I first moved to Arizona, I nearly got into an accident in one of these reversible lanes because I didn’t understand what it was.
