Suffering with TMJD is one of the worst pains physically and mentally. I’m needing a total jaw joint replacement surgery at the age of 16. This surgery is so expensive and should undoubtedly be covered by insurance! We use our jaw for everything!!

As a TMJ sufferer myself, I feel this joint should be treated the same, if not a top priority. Yes bad knees, hips and shoulders make it a struggle in life.. but when you struggle eating, drinking, talking, even sleeping it can cause even more issues.. malnutrition, exhaustion, dehydration... TMJ is real and it affects so much more than people realize!!!!

My daughter has TMJ issues and expertise in this area seems difficult to find. We’ve found so-called practitioners in California with dubious or unhelpful suggestions. Insurance coverage should be linked to professionals who can give adequate treatment and advice.

I was abused as a child, and it caused permanent structural damage to my jaw. I have severe skeletal misalignment—my teeth don’t meet at rest, my jaw has recessed into my neck, and I live with constant TMJ pain, nerve compression, and facial distortion. This is not just a muscular issue or a cosmetic concern. It’s a confirmed skeletal deformity: likely Skeletal Class II or III Malocclusion with Severe Anterior Open Bite, Mandibular Retrognathia, or Combination Jaw Deformity. I was promised surgery as a child. Instead, I was handed a $7,000 bill and left to deteriorate. Now I can’t chew or yawn without extreme pain. Even sneezing triggers full-body nerve flares. My nervous system is collapsing, and I’ve developed autoimmune issues from the stress and pain of it all that might prevent me from qualifying for surgery at all. This condition causes lifelong trauma, disability, and medical harm. It’s not dental—it’s medical. It’s time we stop letting people like me fall through the cracks.

I had always thought TMJ was limited to a selective few until I asked around and starting finding other parents commonly experienced TMJ issues with their children. It's saddening that insurance rarely if ever covers this disorder. It's time for a change!

TMJ has affected me for over a year and searching for care is so difficult, let alone financing it. I am in pain daily and it is affecting my mental health. This is a complex disorder, compounded by stressful environments and not helped by sedentary lifestyles. I wish everyone who suffers from this relief. It turns out a lot of people around me have had TMJ or have it currently.

I have cystic bone degeneration in my TMJ and insurance won't cover it. I'm suck with daily pain and knowing every day my jaw is deteriorating more and more. I'm in my 30s and it's sad to think about where my jaw will be in a decade. There needs to be a change beyond living with constant pain. The US needs to do better

I have been living with TMJ for 6 months. It started suddenly been on soft foods since. I had no idea how common it is and the lack of insurance coverage available. this needs to change. it is so debilitating on so many levels and ruins your quality of life. why will insurance cover surgeries for people desease related issues from abusing your body but not fo TMJ which is a joint issue not related to something a person intentionally did to themselves. We need help too!!!
