I am one of the millions suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Despite trying mouth guards, physical therapy, and mouth exercises, nothing has alleviated my pain like Botox. However, this treatment costs me around $1000 every three months to stay pain and headache-free because insurance does not cover TMD treatments.

TMD affects between 5% and 12% of the population (source: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research), causing significant discomfort and reducing quality of life. It is unjust that sufferers like myself are left to bear the financial burden alone due to insurance companies' refusal to cover these necessary treatments.

TMD causes a decreased quality of life and treatment should be considered medically necessary. Untreated TMD can lead to issues with hearing, sleep, and chronic body and facial pain. As TMD progresses, the jaw dislocates and can completely lock up. In severe cases, TMD causes permanent damage to the bones in the jaw. This can be avoided by treating TMD before it becomes worse.

We call upon lawmakers and health insurance providers alike to recognize TMD as a serious medical condition requiring comprehensive coverage. No one should have to choose between financial stability or living without chronic pain. We urge you all to mandate medical insurance companies cover all treatments for TMD.
