As a survivor of conversion therapy, there is nothing humane, helpful, or life saving about this type of treatment. I’ve spent the last decade with clinically diagnosed PTSD from this “care”.
Do the right thing. KEEP THE BAN!
Conversion therapy actively hurts people and is in no way effective. Allowing this practice to occur will do so much harm to children who are vulnerable and particularly at risk.
Conversion Therapy IS NOT THERAPY. It is extremely traumatizing and harmful, particularly for children who have no meaningful power or agency to reject such treatment.
This is just cruel. Do you think children want to be different? Do you think they want to subject themselves to possible bullying, rejection, humiliation, etc? This is not something children choose. It is who they are as people. Give them a voice. Support them. Empower them. I stand with them all the way.
Conversion "therapy" is not therapy, it is an abhorrent practice that needs to be treated criminally due to the amount of harm it inflicts on the client and their friends and family. Such "treatment" has been shown to increase depression, anxiety, and suicidality to name a few. Inflicting this abusive and life altering "therapy" upon children that are vulnerable, questioning, or identify as LGBTQ+ is particularly heinous. It is a reprehensible black mark in the history of counseling and needs to be treated as such.
Conversion therapy is not helpful, does not work, and is extremely harmful. It's abhorrent that an adult would try to forcibly change a minor's sexual orientation or gender identity and argue it as "free speech."
I was diagnosed with SMI in my late 20s and I know that for people suffering from mental illness, life can be dead serious, and life can be terribly unfun. I believe that allowing people to access art therapy, they can benefit by being allowed to exercise the creative and fun side of their selves that their mental illness often prohibits.
