Went to this camp for many years, and it wasn’t until later that I started to feel the off vibes of this place, and even working there briefly to really start to see the dark side. The controlling nature of this camp to not only cover up the stories publicly, but also to shame victims to keep them silent is appalling. The culture the camp shames kids into believing they are at fault for abuse and that “turning kids to god” is more important than bringing the perpetrators to justice. Let the kids speak out on this, especially since the silence of Pete Newman’s case left so many people in the dark of what was actually happening for years, despite that being the most public of many cases against the camp staff. Let the voices of the victims be heard!
I worked at Kanakuk for a couple of years during college. As a staff member, I witnessed staff assault and the men were physically scarred from some of the practices there. This isn’t just about the kids. This is about 40,50,60-year old directors beating up on 17-21 year-old employees. This is about being told “you’re right. This is assault.” Just to keep you quiet. This is about employees being forced to fully cover up at the pool because they have bloodied bodies. This is about the kids being held and played with and saying “no put me down stop now” and the employees getting reprimanded when they physically take the kid away from the staff member who is harassing them. This is about the rules made for women that never apply to the men. This camp has so much darkness that needs to come to light.
I went to Kanakuk/Kanakomo for years. My impression of Joe White was the he truly believed in his mission and the kids. Joe if you ever read this - do the right thing and release people. Protecting abusers and yourself isn’t what I imagine Jesus would do, but I found in my adult life that things like this make me question the true hearts of touters of religion. Your behaviour, and lack of it, speaks volumes.
I am a therian with only one theriotype.I think this camp would be great because even I struggle with being bullied for being a therian.A camp would be a great place where you can express yourself and make friends.
As a house cat/wolf therian and otherkin, I LOVE this idea. I've seen roleplays on Quotev of this (I posted the link in their comment sections) and wanted to make it a reality, but I wasn't sure anyone would even come. I'm so happy to see so many people supporting and being able to participate.
I personally am not therian, otherkin, or anything of the sort. However, i do believe in the freedom of expression and the right to identify as who or what you want. People who identify as anything but cisgender are ostracized, and i want to help put an end to it. This is just one of the first steps to do such. Everyone deserves a place where they belong, and i think this will be it for a lot of people.
Hi! My name is Kai, and I am a therian, otherkin and a furry. I think this would be a GREAT summer camp because of all the hate therians, furries and otherkin get. This hate can seriously affect someone’s mental health, especially if they are a minor. This camp could be able to allow therians, furries, and otherkin to make friends that have similar identities to their own.
As a therian, furry, and otherkin, I have experienced this hate myself. Whether it be people at a public setting, or at a school, it has seriously affected my mental health as a minor. This camp would seriously help me and my friends to find our group, and it is a fantastic idea. I’ve gotten my mother to sign it, because she also supports this idea.
If this summer camp is created, I, and hopefully some of my friends, will definitely be attending.
Thank you for this petition, and I really hope we can make this idea a reality!
I am a therian, and I have friends who are nice, but I have no way to truly express myself. there are therian camps, but none in north carolina. people bully me sometimes, but I would love to meet friends who are therians and finally express myself for who I truly am.
