This degree I am working towards, to be able to help people, should not be founded on my own exploitation. Childcare, transportation expenses, wear and tear on my vehicle, long hours, and loss of hours to be able to work gainful employment are all barriers to degree completion. It has been incredibly difficult and taxing on my mental health and my cohorts. Interns are told to practice self care and then are exploited for unpaid labor in vast majority of placements. It needs to end, we deserve better, the practice needs to align with coursework and not place students in exploitative situations.

I had to fight for internships and waited until a month into the spring semester to start an internship. I took a huge pay decrease to do this and it has caused massive stress. My school required an average of 23 hours a week, there was no way I could have been able to manage saying living expenses unpaid. Luckily I was able to get a paid one but they told me I would not be able to have the same learning opportunities compared to unpaid, so most of my internships was self exploratory. I have learned a lot, but. I wish I would’ve been able to go into a field I am more passionate about, but I couldn’t.

This is a huge issue and one I wish was talked about more. Practicums and internships that require working for free, almost always during business hours, make it IMPOSSIBLE for people who can't afford to do that, or to take on tens of thousands of dollars in student loans. Though field learning is essential, the current system is exploitative and wrong, and it's a barrier that should not exist.

I had to quit my job and work for free to complete my fourth year practicum. This affected my children, husband, and the lives of those I was supporting in my paid role. More debt and added dysfunction to my life. I’m privileged enough to have a partner that could do after school care for my children.

Unpaid internships ruin careers and lives. This puts unnecessary financial hardship on those working towards careers who may already have student loan debt, and their families. Many have to give up their career aspirations when they can no longer afford the privilege of working an unpaid internship in the current economy.

As an MSW student, the unpaid hours resulted in me having to aquire more student loans to supplement the lost work hours and still maintain my bills. No matter how much I budgeted or sacrificed, adding 15 unpaid hours a week on top of school, work, being a mother, etc was unrealistic. The increased student loans will certainly make it msw journey far more costly than anticipated. Im the first person in my entire family to get a masters level degree and also Native. This is not equitable nor does it serve an actual purpose.

I am not a traditional student but rather a mother of two completing my degree and it is challenging taking on an unpaid job while also trying to provide. Im glad I am not alone in this.

CRT is essential to understand the lived experiences of People of Color. Without it we continue to let narratives that don’t represent us, reign upon our school system.

It’s so important to have mental health professionals that can treat the person as a whole and understand where issues come from.

I am an LPC in Texas. I care about this issue because I believe this helps understand other cultures and ethnicities. It is an essential part of our learning!! I live in the south and work with people all over TX. This helps me out A LOT!!! Please keep this requirement! Thank you!
