Victories in Small Town Growth

As someone who has lived in this area for over 20 years, I whole heartedly agree there need to be changes. We drive thru Lillington frequently and rarely ever stop because of the lack of options. Over the years, I have poured far more money into Sanfords economy despite being a Harnett county resident. For Lillington to be the county seat there are so many limited options for dining, entertainment or basic needs and repairs.

I moved out here eight years ago from crazy land, Southern CA. Slowly, over many years, I watched my little town in Ca, little by little, turn into a massive concrete jungle. We had to drive further and further away from the RAT RACE just to go hiking in peace and quiet. We moved out to Greenville County because it was quiet and offered alot of what we had lost. Paris Mountain is one of the areas that closed the deal for us relocating here. Beautiful views with space to breath. Every time we go hiking we pinch ourselves and say, " I can't believe this is right in our own backyard, how blessed are we!" Please don't ruin our beautiful landscape for the all mighty dollar. It's just not worth it. KEEP PARIS MOUNTAIN AREA GREAT! We just don't need anymore concrete jungles.

Please email Marriott at sustainability@marriott.com and voice your concerns. See my submission if you wish to use as a guide: I am writing to Marriott as a concerned resident who lives at the foot of Paris Mountain where The Divine Group is proposing to develop a Marriott Tribute Hotel (The Inn at Altamont) on land that is currently designated as an environmentally sensitive district. It is my understanding that this developer has no previous experience developing a large hotel, and in particular, doing so in a setting that is widely regarded as sacrosanct to the Greenville community. Our community is still in the process of recovering from wide-spread environmental damage caused by hurricane Helene in the fall of 2024, and like many other areas in South Carolina, has experienced widespread overdevelopment in the last 5-plus years. As such, it should come as no surprise that the recent announcement by The Divine Group to build a 150,000 sq. ft. luxury hotel on the shoulder of a signature landmark is causing tremendous concern among area residents. I implore Marriott representatives to monitor the feedback on this proposed development at: https://www.change.org/p/say-no-to-the-altamont-inn-resort-on-paris-mountain-preserve-our-small-town-spirit?source_location=search. It is my hope that when Marriott begins to investigate and understand the scope and magnitude of community concern, your firm will do the right thing and walk away from this project. Marriott’s name and reputation is being tied to a project that should have never gotten this far. The Divine Group is hosting a meeting at Furman University in Greenville on February 10th to present their proposed plans to the public. Representatives from your Sustainability group should be in attendance if Marriott seeks to go into this arrangement with "eyes wide open”. I believe you will be shocked at the level of push back that is rapidly forming in response to this ill conceived hotel plan. You should know that every effort is being made to rapidly elevate this matter to national news media and key local, county and state politicians. I feel confident that Marriott values your reputation as much as we value our community. Please step up and help us stop this development by removing your ties to The Divine Group.

My husband is an avid cyclist. Climbing Paris Mountain gives him and so many other cyclists indescribable joy. The roads are narrow and potentially treacherous if a car goes too fast as it is — for drivers and cyclists. Increased traffic will be bad for all — not to mention the residents. A venture of this magnitude sounds inviting, but it would destroy the secluded beauty that comes from an area not overdeveloped.

Part of Paris Mountain’s natural appeal—like many similar places in South Carolina—is its peaceful, undisturbed beauty. This is precisely what draws people to the area. From a business standpoint (since profit is clearly the driving force), do you not see how you’re destroying the very thing that makes this location desirable?

I moved to Greenville back in 2010. Things were great, small town charm and I was able to get away from the hustle and bustle of busy city life easily, now not so much. This resort that is proposed on Paris Mountain would NOT be a good change. Our current infrastructure cannot support any more growth or expansion. We don't have anywhere to put any more traffic. Building this resort would put additional strain on our infrastructure. Combine out of town distracted drivers and we have a recipe for disaster. I love Altamont road and what it is now. I don't have to ride for hours to find a quiet road. I have one right in my backyard. In response to traffic studies and environmental studies, I don't think those are even close to accurate. Please keep Paris Mountain like it is don't build this. I do not support developing on any part of this mountain.

We called Paris Mountain home for over 20 years. We chose it for the serenity and beauty. We also witnessed tragic accidents that regularly occur in the winding road as people raced around the bends. For bikers it was risky as cars speed around the curves. The road itself cannot handle this amount of traffic that this project would undoubtedly bring. I hope this is voted down

We need to stop prioritizing growth and only listening to businesses and developers whose priorities are only revenue. Our government needs to represent the people, the average person, who want their green spaces to remain green. Preserve nature. Conserve what we have.

I care about this issue. I care about it a lot. We have plenty of hotels. We have enough of everything throughout this country. No need to build one at this wonderful and one of a kind state park. This state park is not only important for its entire ecosystem and wildlife. It’s also very important for us humans as well. It’s not called a state park for nothing. Never heard of a hotel being put in a place that’s specifically made to be in nature for everyone to enjoy peace and time out in the woods. We go to these places to get away from things like these. Make it make sense. Thank you
