Don’t get me wrong, I love the gym - but there is a time and place for everything. It is disrespectful to the dedication and hard work we have put in our studies to have our ceremony held in a gymnasium. Our gym is NOT a stadium like other big schools, and we have plenty of places on campus that are more honorary (PMC/HPAC). As a student who will be walking, I am upset at the chosen location!
I find it disrespectful to graduate in a gym after years of hard work and spending thousands of dollars. A change of venue, whether PMC or any other option, would be very important. It would be nice to get able to have a voice in our graduation, to be able to at least negotiate options and for administration to be transparent with us about these issues that affect us so personally.
I feel extremely disrespected by the decision to move graduation to the gym. For years, this important milestone has been held in the church or HPAC, spaces that reflect the significance of the occasion. This change shows a complete lack of concern for students who want to celebrate with both immediate and extended family. Many of us have worked tirelessly for this moment, and now we are being forced into a space that is neither appropriate nor accommodating. This is completely unacceptable, and I strongly urge the administration to reconsider this decision.
I wholeheartedly agree with this petition. A college graduation is a significant accomplishment and the venue should reflect such distinction. A gymnasium is appropriate for an athletic event or pep rally but it is not suitable for a college graduation; especially when you have two remarkable options (PMC and HPAC). A student has dedicated 4-6 years at Andrews and you stick them in the gym to celebrate their accomplishments without an explanation. Shame on you Andrews University; you must do better. The gym doesn't cut the mustard especially when you have the elementary and high school graduations in more suitable venues.
