I was on campus when Mr. Kirk was attacked. I did not want him at UVU to begin with, but I do mourn the fact that he was killed.
However, I am transgender. I do not believe he would have mourned my death if I had been shot instead.
The media has largely reflected this event as though he was a perfect man. In reality, many students did not want him at UVU because of his hateful politics and debates.
Please do not treat this event as though there is no nuance. If a permanent memorial is created on campus, please allow it to show all sides of the story, instead of immortalizing one point of view.
I homeschool and gun violence is the primary reason why. I know I'm in a privileged position to be able to choose to educate my children at home. No one should have to choose between their children's education and safety.
My son is going to be 3 this year, and my biggest fear is sending him to school. My mother has been a teacher for longe than i’ve been alive, and for years now i’ve been terrified of receiving the call that she was killed in her school. I myself was involved in a school shooting threat when I was in high school. We need change. we need to make school a safe place again, for students and teachers.
what if theres an emergency like a school shooting? i dont trust texas schools to keep me safe, especially if i wouldnt even be able to contact my family in that situation. what if a family members in the hospital? there are so many things that we need our phones to feel safer with. my mom struggles with her health severely, what if something happens to her and i cant even know until after the school day? banning our phones is inconsiderate of all these things that may be happening in students lives where theyd need to contact a parent. theyre not always a distraction
i got my fukcing phone taken away because i was taking a picture of notes on the board and i got a DISCIPLINE RECORD are we fucking serious can the sun just explode already
