I have seen, first hand, how important this program has been for our grandchildren, the last of which is just finishing the program in June. They have learned so much more than in any conventional classroom about things like emotions, leadership, tactile learning and so much more. They also enjoyed higher teacher to student ratios. A really valuable learning program. We want other kids, esp kids from low income households, to have this exceptional learning experience. Please don’t leave our little beach town Bezos.
This program supports so much early learning for kids that otherwise might not get the opportunity for vital learning at an hugely important stage of life. Education is a vital investment on everyone's future.
My Children both attended PV MELA. In fact my son attended both MeLA and VELA. Both of my children benefited tremendously. My son being neurodiverse really needed that structured early development and DK and I’m happy to say is thriving in a University setting. The providers were amazing and went above and beyond. My daughter also benefited as she has an October birthday and wasn’t quite confident enough to start Kindergarten MELA gave her that extra time and she was a top student all through her school years in PV and college. The staff was amazing and caring please don’t abandon them or the valuable contributions they provide.
This school has meant a great deal to my family, especially our son. The teachers and staff have made our first preschool experience the best we could possibly hope for and with another child on the way we would be devastated if they had to attend another school. Please do not shut these schools down.
I have 2 daughters who have either attended or are currently attending VELA since the age of 2 years old. These teachers and staff members have taken care of my children with incredible care and compassion. In this day and age, it cannot be understated how important local community is. Consistency of these educators at these school sites is critical for the preservation of our local community culture. We should do right by them as they’ve done right by us for so many years. It is short sighted to believe that they can easily be replaced in time. I hope I can send my future kids to be taught be the same group of incredible humans.
MELA is a great school site with truly exceptional educators that go above and beyond in all they do. I urge the District to do the same now and go above and beyond 2 meetings to strategize how to save as many of our amazing teachers as possible. Our early education teachers have committed their lives to low pay and often low respect, because they harbor an unwavering commitment to early childhood education (which we all know studies continually show as the most crucial point of time in a person's learning and brain development). I ask the district to show even a fraction of our MELA teachers' commitment in this moment. The idea that we are suddenly rushing to save an early education site and the jobs held by quality educators, signals a significant strategic failure of the district. We should be all working on long term strategies to grow our education offerings and uplift/support our teachers more, rather than participating in a last minute scramble to put together a survival plan.
This wonderful place welcomed my two daughters who didn't speak a single word of English. The teachers gave them the care and support they needed during such a difficult time in their lives. A new country, new teachers, new friends and a new language. We spent 3 very enriching years at this school and there wasn't a day when I regretted this decision. Thank you all for this time.
I have had 2 children go through MELA with a third on track to be begin attending MELA in a year. MELA is a warm, safe, friendly environment and I have so enjoyed having my children attend the school. It was recommended by my pediatrician and I am so happy that we found this gem of a school. If the school is taken away from us or downsized, it will eliminate a vital resource that parents on this side of the hill have for the next generation.
Our first grandchild spent time at Shawnee State Children’s Learning Center when she was 2-3 yr old. I remember her talking about becoming a Shawnee State Bear when she grew up The learning center did more than just provide a daycare. It inspired little ones to grow up and attend Shawnee. She did attend when she graduated high school How many others over the years have also been inspired and what will happen if it’s no longer there?
