I am an addict in recovery and it is VITAL to continue to reach the addict still suffering. There is a very small window of opportunity to get an addict from the moment they make the decision to get help until the moment they are in a safe supportive environment before their addiction takes over again. Once we have that supportive environment and people in place, we have that chance to make a change and get our lives back, but if there is nothing there in that very vital moment of opportunity, as I said before, the addiction takes right back over we lose that choice all over again. Peer support was there for me when I was begging the hospital to put me in a bed yet they sent me back out the door. Peer support were the ones who helped me get applications in to treatment centers and sober living when the hospitals ran me out of their cafeterias after 2 days of trying to find a bed and being terrified of walking back out on that street homeless before a safe bed became available. They talked with me, texted me, made sure I had a point of contact if I needed it just to make sure I was ok while they did everything they could to help me get a place to go to until I was able to be accepted into Oxford House and move in. Even with them, I still relapsed during those 2 weeks from jail being homeless until getting that safe bed, but without them, I wouldn't have had a chance. I would still be stuck in my addiction all over again if I even survived it. This is such and important thing to have and I promise you, millions will die without it!! The numbers may be looking better now than they have in the past, but the ONLY reason for that is because of the creation of peer support and having that link readily available in that time between making the decision and actually being able to get to the place that addict needs to be to have a chance. Otherwise, they are lost in the street with no voice, no hope, and nowhere to go besides what they are already used to. Please don't take this help away!!

Oxford house has helped me change my life around. I don't know what would have happened if it wasn't an Oxford House Community

My name is Rachel and I suffer from several debilitating mental health/psychiatric conditions. I have suffered from these since I was a young teen. I have just finished my hours to take the state exam to become a Peer Recovery Specialist to help others facing mental health challenges like myself. I have used services such as my local Community service Board for myself and my children and was given high quality care. Losing the ORS would have a huge negative impact on Peer services and services for all at the CSBs.

Hi. My name is Annie. I am a mom with recovery in both Mental Health and Addiction. No other organization would help me except the ORS and the peers that it trains. If it were not for the ORS, I would not be alive today and still here with my 6 children. NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US.... this includes the separation of powers.

I lived with substance use disorder for 28 years. I was miserable and left pain and destruction in my wake. I prayed for death nearly every day. But once I chose to fight for my life instead, I was blessed with something called a "Peer Recovery Specialist". I didn't know what that was, but I quickly learned it was a person who had similar experience to me, who I could relate to. Someone who checked in on me and gave me any reasonable help I asked for. My Peer introduced me to AA and Oxford House. He didn't save my life on his own, but I don't think I would be alive today to sign this petition with nearly 3 years of recovery if he hadn't been there for me when I was ready to admit I needed help. I am working on my PRS certification today so I can hopefully help others find the hope that is essential for recovery. Without hope, all is lost. Please do not destroy or roll back the tremendous progress that we have built for decades in opening eyes, hearts, and minds to the power of Peer Support. The Office of Recovery Services saves lives, and I am literally living proof.

Hello! My name is Amanda. I am an addict in recovery. I have lived in the DMV area my whole life and had have never heard of ORS. I am glad such a place exists for people wanting to get help with alcoholism/mental health or substance abuse issues. Currently, I live in Virginia and have used resources such as the CSB to get assistance in my times of need. I was at Cornerstones, a residential treatment center for 2 years and have been living at an Oxford House for 3 years. These 2 places have helped me tremendously and am thankful they exist within our community.

After losing my cousin to an overdose in 2023 I have had to answer some really tough questions from her youngest child. When he asked me if he could have done something to save her, it broke my heart. He was lucky to not be there when it happened - other children aren't so lucky (if you can really call it luck). They need effective solutions that are simple to use, even though we don't ever want them to have to be "the one" who has to respond. There are endless examples of scenarios like this which means there is no one size fits all or a perfect response. We need whatever options that allow for someone to be able to respond when a person is dying from an overdose. Whether they are a child or an adult, trained or not. Period. People don't need to die because we told them they could only get this tool or that tool when there are a spectrum of options available.
