Mountain lions are a topic of ongoing concern due to their declining population and conflicts with human settlements. Petitions under this topic address issues such as habitat destruction, hunting regulations, and conservation efforts to protect these majestic animals. One petition with thousands of signatures urges governments to designate more protected areas for mountain lions to prevent further habitat loss. Another petition calls for stricter laws against poaching and trophy hunting of these vulnerable species. By engaging with these petitions, individuals can contribute to the preservation of mountain lions and advocate for their right to thrive in their natural environment. As a entomologist in the LA area, I can attest that this development will have serious impacts on native bees, butterflies, and other insect wildlife that have already been hit hard by habitat destruction and climate change. We do need more homes, but not these, and not here. Build in already developed land, and build up, not out!
The overdevelopment of Southern California needs to stop! There are multiple native species, from the endangered mountain lions to Crotch’s bumblebees and many bird species, who call these wild lands home, and are running out of space to live, hunt, migrate to, and breed. These homes are built in extreme fire-risk areas, which puts the homeowners’ homes and lives at stake, raises everyone’s home insurance rates up, and costs all of us taxpayers millions of dollars each year for firefighting efforts and fire mitigation. Californians deserve access and enjoyment of wild lands around them, and to not be surrounded by concrete and homes everywhere that they look. The beauty of nature and wildlife has been proven over and over with research to provide stress relief from our daily hectic lives. Our children deserve to see and enjoy these mountains the way they were intended, which is green, wild, and free! Many of these mountains are also significant places for Native Indian populations of California and hold significance to their past and future tribe members. Once these wild lands are gone, they are gone forever! There is no going back. There is so much at stake here! It’s time to stop greedy corporations from overdeveloping our communities purely for the profit! These corporations should NOT be allowed to use 20 year old environmental impact reports to build NOW, as our environment, land, the animal’s use of the land, and habitat destruction have all CHANGED over the past 20 years! These EIR’s are grotesquely outdated and should not be allowed! Corporations from NEVADA should NOT be allowed to overdevelop California! Go build your 220 home “luxury” community, which by the way NONE of your workers can afford, in NEVADA, and leave our beautiful state of California alone! Enough is enough!!
It is time Caltran do the responsible thing and immediately take measures to protect humans, animals and vehicles along 280 freeway. Tragic for Luna's cubs to live at a zoo for their lifetime. Many times I have seen dead animals on freeways on 880, 84, 680, 101 freeway and elsewhere and it is always heartbreaking. It is a very painful way for any human and animal to die to be hit by any vehicle. Caltran is a mess. Whenever I called them to pick up any dead animal, they did NOT even pick them up. I witnessed them waste away. Many times, I picked some dead cats and dropped them to a shelter or clinic nearby.
