As a parent and an educator I can attest to the importance of consistent learning and social environments. My son was forced abruptly out of a school and he developed a stutter and his social development was stunted for years! My mother had a similar experience growing up where a corrupt principal sent her and other students to a different school so he could bus in children from his neighborhood. Her social development was stunted, she struggled to make friends and was unable to fit in even at church because all her classmates went to the original school. It was extremely detrimental to a shy and quiet young girl and affected her personal development and school interactions and career going forward. No every child handles transitions well. Some children require a consistent and stable learning and social environment to thrive and succeed. Disrupting the reliable routine and environment can be extremely detrimental and can cause academic, social, emotional, and developmental consequences. While children are resilient, some struggle with change more than others. This is particularly true with students who are shy, struggle to make new friends and social connections, children who struggle with changes in their environment and routine, children who have experienced trauma and instability in their past, have special needs, disabilities or learning challenges. Children in these categories are more at risk of detrimental effects from changing schools. It should be noted that moving houses or schools is also listed on the Adverse Childhood Experience assessment or ACE and when combined with other factors can cause long lasting impacts on children's health and well-being into adulthood. I have volunteered frequently at schools and advocate for marginalized groups, mental health, nuerodivergence, and individuals with disabilities to get the access and resources they need. Switching schools/systems has significant impact on the student. It takes considerable time to get reacclimated, establish new friendships (this doesn't always happen), etc. Even if the denial is by the book, education should be compassionate and focus on the well-being of the student.

It is my sincere hope that the Berkley Education School Board would allow this young man to stay in the only school district he has ever known. His family has strong roots in our community and his family was promised that he would be able to stay—even upon moving to a different city. It seems unfair and in bad faith not to allow him to continue he his education here.

Of all the issues facing our city and of all the money we waste, we can't let a kid who's been in the district for a decade just finish up his education?
