I care about this issue because if we don’t do something about this soon there will be no turning back. For a long time the people of this country have accepting things as they are, believing that we aren’t the ones responsible for making change, but we can’t afford to do that anymore. We’ve been tricked into fighting amongst ourselves instead of looking for the real enemy, who’ve been pretending to have our best interests in mind this whole time. It isn’t right that a few should have a measurable percent of the world’s resources, while the bottom 50% struggle to keep our heads above water. I worry that we are already too far gone and that many have already been deceived in full by our honorless “leaders”. It seems like this democracy has already given up its lust for freedom, like it was voted away without a question every being raised.
Using GoGuardian had the right idea but clumsy execution. Every time I get a project I have to use a third party device from home in order to get the necessary information to excel in my class. However, some teachers enforce us to use our school issued chromebook and when using that it limits the websites that could give us genuinely useful information. it’s not fair, my average grade from 10th grade so far on assignments I had to research on my school issued chromebook with GoGuardian is around a 83%, however, using my personal computer for research assignment I have an average of a 91% which honestly is insane to me. Why is our schools that want us to succeed limiting us on websites that are setting us up for success?
A little over a year ago, the school blocked Google Earth on school devices. When I asked one of my teachers how they felt about this, they said “how are students supposed to learn geography without Google earth?” This question has only became more apparent in the months following the ban on Google Earth, as the school, using GoGuardian, blocked a majority of the internet. This has caused intense annoyance for the students. Being a student at SHS myself, whenever I get a project, I’m expected to go and spend my class time researching the subject. Instead, I use my class time scrolling through the Google search results, trying to find the one semi-decent website to research using. The extreme use of GoGuardian leaves students to be confused and annoyed at the system. While GoGuardian does rightfully block websites that shouldn’t be accessed in school, the extent that it is taken to, where I can’t even access websites that teachers give us, is taken way too far. I shouldn’t have to use personal devices to find reliable facts about my subjects when I’m at school or home. The use of this program at this extent makes it feel as if we’re being forced down a long and convoluted road to get to a simple answer, and makes no sense to continue using at this point.
