Hickory doesn't have very many opportunities to support fair trade art. UWG is one of the few places to shop in person and support ethical, fair-trade artists locally. Not only would this be a loss to the artists and vendors, it would be a loss for the community as well.

As a former board member I am shocked by this decision. UWG has been a singular shopping experience in Hickory, and will be missed by many. They are a consistent community booth at the Downtown Hickory Farmers Market, and have been the visible, involved source for fair trade artisan craft and gift items in our greater community.

I have purchased gifts and items for my own home for years. We must continue to support the artists around the world who create these wonderful products and give them a fair wage for their work. UWG does that! Do not take that away from our area.

The current UWG board did NO fund raising in 2024, and worked only to close our beloved fair trade store WITHOUT reaching out to donors or volunteers to help. This board is disconnected from the operation and should STEP DOWN IMMEDIATELY. There are volunteers who are willing to step up and take the responsibility moving forward so get out of the way before there is nothing in Hickory where something lovely now exists. Why wouldn’t the board let others take it from here? Afraid to be wrong? The volunteers have no confidence in the current “leadership”. I am a donor but will not support UWG until the current board chair changes.

I lived in Hickory for 6 years (2015-2021), and loved shopping at UWG. I felt good supporting artisans around the world and always found unique items for myself or to give as gifts. Closing a store that is solvent and does so much good globally and locally doesn't make any sense. A new board needs to take over and keep this wonderful local store open.

As a former board member and a loyal UWG shopper for 30 years, I am saddened by the mere THOUGHT of closing this Hickory institution. Yes, it's a small nonprofit endeavor, but it has a big impact on those who provide the products sold and those who appreciate the mission and who support the store through their purchases. The store's impact effects not only the artisans and customers, but also the Executive Director who has given her creativity, experience and loyalty to UWG for many years. This gift shop, this fair trade gem in our community is special and should remain open.
