It’s the wrong place. What other city has a dominating office skyscraper towering over its Parliament or congress? It’s a big con by a Sydney-based developer grabbing free public land. And our State Parliament has national heritage listing for a series of world -first democracy achievements. A 3-storey building has already been approved for the site and there is an alternative vision to give that a great civic purpose as a democracy hub. A cost-benefit analysis shows Adelaide would fare much better from this idea than private profit heading off to a Sydney developer.
The proposed Walker Corp Tower 2 is a very short sighted proposal that is in the wrong location. This section of North Tce should remain the cultural boulevard of Adelaide city with stunning views across the Torrens & out to North Adelaide, not skyscrapers. (The existing tower is an absolute eye sore detracting from the beautiful aesthetics of the area & should never have been built). Properly considered, the space could be a vibrant & popular public engagement precinct without the Tower. The majority of activities proposed for Tower 2 can be done elsewhere, but the cultural precinct & views can't be moved elsewhere. The Malinoukis govt confiscating public land, not consulting with the community, & ignoring the concerns of people well educated in heritage & public spaces is completely unacceptable & needs to stop. We are a democracy & have processes for a reason. We don't want a Trump styled dictatorship here. The people of SA want the cultural precinct from the Railway Station down to Dequettiville Tce & it's promenade to remain without high rise developments. We don't want this area to be one of facadism & heritage buildings overshadowed. You are giving away our heritage for a quick dollar.
I’ve lived in Adelaide for over 50 years in that time I’ve seen the Adelaide city skyline change a lot . But to put another tall building that will be a skyscraper in front of one our historic buildings , Parliament House, is disgraceful and ruining the whole area around the festival centre as well .
Our city used to be one of the most beautiful skylines and now it’s being ruined by multiple high rises .
Listen to the people of Adelaide, not an interstate corporation that doesn’t care about our city !
The Furlan Club to us means a lot!
It is where our aging parents go to mingle with friends, have a great affordable meal and play games, whether it is bocce or slot machines….most importantly they feel safe and familiar at their Italian Club. It also brings families together. I always loved bringing mum to the club, knowing she would bump into one of her friends and off she would go and have a good time while we mingled with our friends.
It was also a safe happy place for the kids where they would be off their electronic devices and communicated and played with their friends while their parents had a meal in peace.
It was a place the men of the families would catch up for a drink at the bar or library that was filled with so much history.
It was home away from home….going to the Furlan Club was like eating at nonna or nonno’s house. It smelt like home and felt like a BIG warm hug.
We particularly loved the good ‘ol fashion’ dinner dances and especially the Steak and Gnocchi nights.
It is nice going to restaurants at times, but to have a familiar place like the Club beats all restaurants!
More importantly, no restaurants TEACHES CULTURE!!!!
The Furlan Club always had educational events on too and helped preserve and promote cultural traditions:
• Cooking Classes (God bless our beautiful mums and nonna’s…it also gave them a purpose in life instead of just sitting at home)
• La Sangra
• BEST Steaks, Pizza’s and Cannoli ever!
• Pasta nights
• Card game nights
• Rock ‘n’ Roll nights
• Fruili Day
• Quail & Polenta night
• VIN BRÛLÉ & CASTAGNE etc etc
All these nights reminds us of the history behind the food and Italian culture and bought up conversations about our parents past or present….Being part of the FURLAN FAMILY is very important!
Many of the functions were not only supported by members of the Club, but many of my friends outside the Club would attend to experience the Italian culture.
Clubs have a way to keep history alive and as we lose more and more of our elderly members and parents it is MORE IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE CLUB ALIVE to remind the next generation of where they came from and that they belong to a community, because as we get into a more uncommunicative world, I believe a Club is a place that reminds the younger generation of the importance of history, food, family and friends.
And NEVER TO FORGET:
The Coro Furlan is the only Male Italian Choir remaining in Melbourne. The Choir is an all-male Italian choir from the region of Friuli. The songs are in Friulian which is one of the languages spoken in Italy, apart from Italian; other songs are sung in the Veneto dialect, and in Italian; the Choir sings Masses in Latin as well. The Choir maintains a heritage and a culture of the area, and enjoys singing and performing these songs.
I played women’s soccer for the club with my sister and friends while my brother and cousins played soccer for the men’s team. The club was a great and vital place for families and friends to gather and bond as a family and community. Let’s support the club and make it Fun and Great again for Families, Friends and the Italian Community again.
The Furlan Club isn’t just a building — it’s where our grandparents gathered, where our parents danced, and where we found community. It holds our stories, our laughter, our roots. We’re not just fighting to save a venue — we’re standing to protect a legacy. I’m proud to support this cause because what we preserve today, we pass on tomorrow.
The Furlan Club disco is where I met my first girlfriend when I was 15 years old .. my 18 year old daughter had her first arancini ball aged 3 at the Furlan Club. When we have any special occasion my entire family and our friends come to The Furlan Club to celebrate, with its amazing atmosphere and italian food, great service and traditional italian folk music from the guys and gals of the Rustica project.
The Furlan Club is the heart and soul of our local Darebin community and an irreplaceable part of our cultural heritage.
Notably and most painful have been these past fews years without it, for me and my family it has stirring the strongest realisation that The Furlan is irreplaceable!! We have missed you Furlan.
Therefore The Furlan Club must return to our community, to the whole community, for patrons from everywhere across Melbourne to be able to experience the richness of Italian culture we know and love. It too, must return to being part of the lives of our ever growing community of Thornbury, and for the many who come to live in Melbourne and want to have one of the best experiences of traditional Italian.
For me the Furlan Club must return and once again be a part of our lives, my childrens lives, where we have all made memories with family and friends and share stories including those of my childhood at The Furlan disco, where I also made some lifelong friendships.
The Furlan Club is to be supported to return to being the place in our community that children of Italian heritage can come to see and experience those distinct traditional values of family, food and song, and where anyone in the community can come to share in the same Italian cultural experience.
The Furlan is to be supported to remain a part of our community and to be returned as a reminder of the proud Italian migration and the building of a life in Australia, and how this was influenced in the values of friendship and close community spirit shaped from a generosity and sharing of meeting places for all to come together and enjoy.
It is through this history and these experiences the The Furlan Club is a vital part of our greater community, which places a great responsibility on those who must decide on it future, that the importance and urgency of The Furlan Clubs return to the community is of utmost importance, for the future continued enjoyment of all families, both yours and mine.
If this proceeds it means that the only furlan club in Victoria is gone forever. The culture will be lost, a place of meeting of people with similar backgrounds gone forever. We must remember the sacrifices that our parents and grandparents made, building this club so people of similar culture can come together. Until recently, the Fogolar Furlan was bustling with people from different cultures including Furlan all coming together. It would be a tragedy for this to disappear forever! Nothing will replace it!
My father was a founder of the Furlan Club.
Going back in the mid to late 1950’s, Furlan friends would gather on a Sunday afternoon in a house in Thornbury. Whilst they played bocce at this place they managed to collect funds to buy a piece of land in Martisi street in Thornbury.
The next stage was to build a club house. This is my painful experience of crying for my dad on Sunday, ( his only day off work) because the club needed to be built and my dad was one of three men pouring its foundation. My father was a concreter and this was his contribution to the club that he loved.
The Furlan club holds many great memories of celebrations, dinner dances and great gatherings.
We must maintain the heritage of this historic place. The club started from humble beginnings by migrants. We need to restore the club and bring life back into the Furlan club to make it the place where families and friends gathered to celebrate life.
