As a long time, Black mountain resident. We need more spaces indoors open to the public. Options for our kids, indoors. For a long time I’ve wished for something to happen with this building. I hope it is considered.
For me, climbing is a community, not just a sport. I want to add my name to the petition to show my support and belief that all people -- including those in the climbing community -- deserve a chance at a livable wage. By stalling negotiations, employee livelihoods are affected. As a member of the climbing community I want to lend my support for prioritizing negotiations to ensure that those who serve the climbing community feel valued and supported.
I shouldn’t have to see my coworkers, who still love routesetting, leave because they can’t afford to live in the Bay Area and work this job. Routesetting is highly skilled labor that produces Touchstone’s primary service/attraction. Without routesetting, the gyms would grow stagnant and the membership numbers would drop immensely. Please support your local routesetter! We love our job and the community around us, but need to be compensated in a way that allows us to live comfortably.
touchstone gyms have been an incredibly welcoming and supportive space, thanks in large part to the kind, helpful, friendly people who check us in, make sure we’re safe and teach classes. They deserve higher wages!
Touchstone staff deserve a living wage, particularly in light of the ongoing membership fee increases. Where is this additional revenue going, if not to the employees who keep Touchstone running? We are advocating for a living wage and financial transparency. The Touchstone community and gyms stand out as exceptional compared to other gym cultures, but it’s becoming clear that both customers and employees are being taken advantage of under Touchstone’s current operating model.
As a SoCal touchstone member who was present during the mess of security threats to the gym, I’ve been disillusioned by the current ownership and management for some time. The soul of Touchstone is with its incredible staff. They are the reason why i haven’t swapped to one of the different gyms in LA; however, I’m sincerely disappointed with how Touchstone has handled the unionizing process and has instead focused its attention on an endless expansion rather than boosting the amazing product it currently has. If the news is true that touchstone is retaining an incredibly expensive and incredibly anti-union law firm to handle negotiations, I am more than upset. With this current price increase, now bringing the total increase in membership cost up 12% in just over a year, I’m sincerely considering leaving Touchstone as it’s clear they do not value the people that make these gyms what they are. Don’t pay for your expensive lawyers with my membership fees. Your workers deserve respect and if you cannot currently give them a living wage with health care, then i believe it’s time to reexamine your current business expansion plans. I hope that Touchstone can course correct, that the gyms we know and love will find their way back to us. If not, there are several other amazing climbing gyms in both SoCal and NorCal that would love our business.
When I became a Touchstone member in 2018, the rate increase emails included what the rate increases were going to: gym renovations and expansions, improved climbing and fitness offerings, broader outreach programs, and competitive wages and comprehensive healthcare for our employees. Not since 2022 has Touchstone included what the rate increases are allegedly going to in the email. With two rate increases in 2024 (May 2024 and subsequently December 2024 for 2025), Touchstone is clearly raking taking a corporate, profit over people approach. The Touchstone staff are what make any and all of the gyms -- they create community and are simply asking to be treated with respect via fair wages and benefits. Touchstone staff make Touchstone, and they deserve the wages and benefits they are organizing for, whereas management not only ignores them, but is actively anti-worker despite their profit and choice to continue with gym expansions.
Touchstone has the opportunity to set the bar for competitive wages in the climbing community and make business choices encapsulated in integrity. I believe you need to include the trainers in this wage increase. Do not let the lawyers squeeze them out of this deal please. They have to travel for one or two hours of pay. They don’t get paid for the 30 before and after every class when people pick their brains about injuries and special stretches. At each of their jobs as trainers they are unable to apply to insurance.
