A government shutdown is the cessation of nonessential federal operations due to a lack of approved funding from Congress. It occurs when lawmakers fail to pass the 12 annual appropriations bills or a continuing resolution by the fiscal year deadline, typically September 30. Essential services like national security and public safety continue, but furloughs affect hundreds of thousands of federal employees and contractors.

Government shutdowns matter due to recent occurrences, including one starting October 1, 2025, from partisan funding disputes. They disrupt services such as passport processing, national park access, and food inspections, while furloughing workers and delaying payments to contractors. Economic impacts include reduced GDP growth and costs rippling to state and local governments reliant on federal funds.

As a federal employee who is required to still come to work as essential personnel, knowing Congress has stopped all payroll for federal employees to include essential personnel until an agreement is reached, really drives the point that Congress shouldn’t be paid either as federal employees or representatives until a funding bill is accepted Los
As the United States veteran and a child of two different races I am appalled at the president and his administration. My families history has created the tapestry that is America. We are a blended family like so many others in America and it is absolutely heartbreaking the abusive power solely so one race or group of people can succeed, that is not how it was raised and that is not the America I grew up in. I fully believe if Congress is going to stop the payment of other federal employees and they themselves should no longer receive a paycheck! The hypocrisy that is continuing to surround this Administration has got to stop now!
I used to work for the Army at an R& D center in NJ, from 1989-1999 during at least 2 Government shutdowns…it is such a waste of time and money as they usually pay back employees retroactively during the shutdown. The only Government employees that should NOT get paid are those that make the laws and control the budget…Members of Congress do your jobs!
