This is my daughter's 3rd year selling cookies and the second time she is receiving a cellphone holder! She's 8! The prizes seem thoughtless and wasteful! Every year it's harder to earn anything decent and with the cost of cookies increasing (and no doubt Council profits) we're already selling less cookies!

As a Girl Scout mom, I see first-hand how hard the girls work toward their goal, and how many sacrifices they make. While I acknowledge that the valuable lessons they learn during Cookie Season are not quantifiable, I can also say that they need to be "compensated" better for their efforts.

We moved here and noticed a big difference in rewards. So much so that my daughter lowered her goal because the big prizes didn't meet her expectation of what she'd received previously. Like the gift cards and tickets. Those were actual experiences with the council reserving space of having meet up at the location. For example, the reward for 650 was Dave and Busters that was rented out for 4 hours for just girl scouts. Build a Bear were several reserved dates to attend parties at the store. And overall, the volunteers at the annual council volunteer conference got a say in picking prizes.

While my girls have never come close to reaching the highest level rewards, I agree with the concept to adjust the reward structure. This year basic things like the cooling bandana were out of reach for many of our girls, let alone anything the girls would want. I also dislike the additional incentives for per girl average selling. We have a large troop, so to sell the number of packages needed to get a measley 5 cents more per package is completely impossible. Add to that incentives thrown out late in the season like the So long S'mores patch and it seems like more gimmicks to get girls to fund council by selling more cookies. I think a lot needs to change, but maybe this is a start.

My daughter dropped put of girl scouts after being discouraged after cookie sales. We don't have local family and she hustled to sell thousands of boxes. She was rewarded with crap. Crap we could purchase at the dollar store.

The girls work so hard they should be rewarded appropriately. I was shocked to see the prizes from other councils! I’ve heard our prizes are lower because of the cost to upkeep our Girl Scout properties, however, the cost of the camps is astronomical and the girls at camp sleep on rusty metal bed frames that look like they came from a junk yard. My daughter is a cadette and would love to be able to earn something cool like an ipad, instead of a pair of socks and a light up scrunchi!

My daughter is 8. As a third year Girl Scout she already has decided she isn’t interested in almost any of the prizes but would rather go for the experiences and cookie credits. It’s been frustrating to not be able to opt out of some of the smallest rewards (which just end up in the trash or donation pile - not a great model of using resources wisely) and to have so few motivating high level rewards. She has earned tickets to elitches the last two years which she loves. But when she saw from friends in other states that they are earning trips to Disney, cruises, technology prizes, etc., it doesn’t feel nearly as motivating. We hope you consider restructuring and including some older girl voices in particular, as we’d love to keep our top-selling troop engaged long term!

The duffle at 1000 pkgs last year was a HUGE motivator for our girls! This year, it’s completely unobtainable and the 1000 pkg reward seems dinky AF. Also, the 750+ prize shouldn’t be so tempting if they want girls to donate to Shoes That Grow… I’m the TCM so I’ll strong arm my kid’s reward selection, but I can’t make the other girls do the right thing and donate instead of getting the cute hat!

I agree with this petition. My kid came from Texas where they were a scout for 8 years there. When we moved here to Colorado and did cookie season, I was shocked at the difference in rewards, especially camp. In my previous Council, 1200 boxes sold would get you a week of camp and so many families took advantage of that. If Colorado can revamp their rewards, I think it would be great for the girls and there might be more participation and drive to sell cookies.

As a girl scouts leader i believe the whole reward system should be revised not just the higher one but all of them. I watch my troop work extremely hard to earn prizes and feel disappointed when the they get it them, it's upsetting, we need to find rewards that will be more motivating to the kids, I had kids this year asking, what they can do with the prizes they don't want. So from my stand point it needs to be fixed, and the other prizes for other areas are better, than ours but the kids aren't making much back from the cookie sales, something needs to be done.
