I can’t imagine school without a music program. I was fortunate to start band in grade 5. I had a real love of music, which grew through the years. As a shy girl, it helped grow my confidence and shape me as a person. Thanks to my love for music, I was able to travel on band trips, enjoy musical theatre, play in the orchestra and achieve a music scholarship. It truly provided me with opportunities. As I started my career in nursing. I used my musical talents to help pediatric patients, using music and song to cheer them up, as they were admitted and going through difficult procedures. I was known as the singing nurse. I’m so grateful to have learned music and have it be such a big part of my life. It has given me greater confidence now to do presentations infront of very large crowds, that would not have happened, if I didn’t get music introduced to me at a young age. Please keep the music program living to shape the new generations.

With my last child heading into Gr. 7 next year it’s so sad that they won’t have the same opportunity. Music is so powerful - and more so shared with classmates.

I wasn’t good at sports, so I found solace in the music department where I NEVER felt judged. Part of a team, I learned transferable skills like leadership, resilience, and adaptability, all which helped me get part time jobs in high school. Now, I am a professional musical theatre performer going to school in Toronto and performing in TUTS Legally Blonde this summer. Without public school music programs, I would not be at the level I am today. Extracurricular classes add up and you have to be training constantly, so I am fortunate enough to have been able to get to a professional level through training predominately in high school. The arts are unfortunately expensive, but public school music programs help make it accessible. Please help future generations find their safe place or a life-long love of music through 7th Grade Band.

If this program is cut and sports is not where a child excels, where does that leave them? How will they fare in high school band if they don’t have this introductory year under their belt. This program gives every child, no matter their circumstances, the chance to excel and should not be removed.
