We've had to have our dog's stomach pumped out twice after he ate a poisoned rat. There are safe alternatives one can use

I love walking with dogs off leash but it is the wombats who must be considered. Their lives should not be put in danger so that dogs and people can have fun. It is their home and that must be respected.
Kate supported: AN OPEN LETTER TO THE BASS COAST SHIRE COUNCIL FOR THE PROTECTION OF WOMBATS IN SAN REMO

My beautiful Gemma came from Save a Dog, she became blind and it was my honour to have adopted her and look after her. I find it horrifying that SADS would be ousted in this way - NO NO NO

I have been rescuing animals for over 40 years, and I am a foster carer for a registed rescue organisation. I have heard horror stories about the LDH over the years, although I believe that they have somewhat improved their practices from the bad old days. BUT I know from various first hand experiences over many years that the Save a Dog organisation, their management, staff and volunteers do an amazing job and always go above and beyond to help and protect all animals in their care. Save a Dog is the best organisation to look after the lost, impounded dogs in Stonnington - the LDH is second rate by comparison, and why wouldn't you want the best for ratepayers animals...

I am not a rescuer but am just a person from the community who has had dealings with LDH over the past 30 years. 1 timid dog my friend fell in love with and wanted to adopt, was euthanased for a flea rash. We met her and she was a sweet and gentle young border collie who leaned against the wire trying to get as close to us as possible. Timid from the endless barking of larger and more boisterous dogs. My friend registered interest and called the morning her impound date was up. She was coldly told she was already euthanased because she had a bad flea rash. My friend was sobbing for a dog she would never get to hold, wracked by the agony of what her last moments in earth would have been, eyes staring wildly around the killing room hoping someone would save her. I then went on to have two experiences of my own where something worse happened. The dogs were being processed and would be available for adoption but not yet...call back. Those dogs were never found again with nobody at LDH being able to tell me where they were, alive or dead. I was treated with coldness, contempt and hostility. The dog I did manage to adopt from them I was told was a crap dog, too energetic, untrained. When I say I was told I was taken into a room with him and two kennel staff who tried to make me backdown from wanting him. When he jumped and countersurfed in that little room and knocked things over they got so coldly excited 'see, he's completely untrained and has to much energy and if you tell him off he'll just do it again '. At that point one moved towards him and YELLED at him and told him to get down. He barely acknowledged her and kept countersurfing. 'See' she cried with glee thinking I'd be put off so they could drag him straight from that room to the killing room. I said I don't see, I see a high energy 10 month old dog who has sat in a cage for a week and been fed preservative laden poor quality food and also doesn't know a lot about people and rules...but he has a good heart and he will learn. I also said I'd been around dogs a long time and that if this is their jobs they needed to learn to read a dog better than that. At that point the hostility in the room made me scared to have him in their another second so I buckled up the collar I'd bought him, snapped on the lead and headed for the door like lightning almost running to their office to complete on paperwork, pay and get him the heck out of there. Not one interaction with LDH across the past 30 years has made me consider that they are not pure evil when it comes to the welfare needed for companion animals. My 2 interactions with SADS, One, a friend adopted a dog, it was a great experience, dog treated beautifully by staff, we were assisted with friendly warmth. Second a dog found by a friend in the area and went to SADS, no owner came forward. My friend got to call for updates and was treated with warmth by staff for enquiring all the way through to the little one landing on their paws with a new family. Stonnington Council, LDH are NOT fit to be part of the tender process for the current SADS site. No matter who is in charge of LDH, the entrenched attitude towards the general public or animals does not change. To move ahead will show the exact ethics of your own organisation and I don't think you want the storm that will come...let alone you should not want it for the animals that call Stonington home.

The council must continue supporting Save A Dog because it’s a no-kill shelter that treats every animal—cat or dog—with compassion and dignity. Unlike alternatives like the Lost Dogs Home, Safe A Dog prioritises life, giving animals the care, rehabilitation, and second chances they deserve. Every life matters, and our community needs shelters that reflect that value. Replacing Save A Dog would be a step backwards. Our community expects better—we expect our council to protect the vulnerable, not abandon them.

I would never have got the rescue dog I did who is now mine. She saved my life! Animals need a voice from those who hunk they are just disposable objects. Save the animals!!

As human beings we MUST be humane and be better to all who do not have a voice, especially animals. If governments REALLY have an issue with too many animals, ensure that there is compulsory desexing unless a licence to breed is paid in each local zone. Do not accept killing as a solution - it’s against all we see as good in humanity

When we wanted to adopt a cat, we visited both Save A Dog Scheme (Stonnington) and a Lost Dogs Home shelter (North Melbourne). The care that Save A Dog Scheme had for their animals and cats in particular, was very different compared to LDH. At SADS we were matched with a cat suitable for us, and utmost care was taken that a cat would get to a good home. Any cat was taken care of, no matter the age. While LDH was more like “pick up any cat you want, we don’t care much”. We were very fortunate to be matched with a gentle 5 years old at SADS, and they truly cared about the cat. It would be horrible if this amazing care would be replaced by LDH - reducing animal welfare and introduce the culling of cats and dogs. This is something I wouldn’t expect from a council in a very prosperous area like Stonnington, and would look very poorly on their judgment.
