Community compost is on the chopping block across the city, in favor of the DSNY compost program. The DSNY program creates and burns methane rather than sequestering it in the soil where it belongs. Smiling Hogshead Ranch is one of the few remaining community compost sites in Queens doing the real work to actually help the environment and build community. Save Smiling Hogshead!
Smiling Hogshead is a vital part of our community, forging connections between neighbors and helping make NYC literally a greener place and a more climate-resilient city.
Smiling Hogshead Ranch has been an incalculably valuable place for me and so many others. I have met some of my most cherished friends there, found, grew, and nurtured parts of myself that have led me to my deepest values, and has offered a constant source of hope and inspiration in an era full of despair and isolation. This community project and space is INVALUABLE and only grows in its value in this world. They need RESOURCES and SUPPORT not THREATS. Please help save the ranch, as it is a huge piece of my heart ❤️
City and local agencies continue to work to erode the good work citizens engage in to make our fair city not just livable but a joy. There are simply not enough green spaces available and as accessible as Smiling Hogshead. This place is a green oasis, a refuge, a place that provides community, food, habitat for non human living things, a space for creativity and clear thinking and breathing.
Those in power, the MTA must meet the requests of garden and rescind this draconian order. Grant a long term land lease and work together as community partners to address social problems.
