Eliminating parts of our history is not restoring history! As a historian, I am horrified to see our federal government attempting to erase the history and contributions of many of its citizens. Why are our elected officials allowing our country to backslide like this?

The history of America is diverse and any attempt to limit it to a single narrative is government censorship. Protect the stories of women, African Americans, Native Americans, and all other Americans.

My husband and I are involved in the history of our local rural community. Knowing and understanding the past helps us understand the present. Our history both the good and bad has always defined us a people . It is criminal to “white wash” it. We are a nation of many different cultures, religions and people .... we should not wipe that away because of him.

I care because I remember in school. Going to museums and plays and enjoying the different creativity from different people and their perspectives. It help shape me into the person I am today. I still enjoy going to museums and plays and enjoying arts and entertainment, and the creativity that goes into it; from all cultures. I collect an eclectic selection of artwork and pieces from different Cultural perspectives.

No one, not even TRump, can change history - but access to that knowledge can be denied. But it never should be, as it’s all of us and how we got here. The Smithsonian must be able to tell our stories - for the lessons it’s striving to tell us.

I visited several Smithsonian museums last year and learned about the history of food and transportation in this country, as well as Asian, modern, and African art. It was a memorable experience and everyone should have access to this information. These museums are free and are national museums. This executive order has a goal of erasing this information and rewriting it in an idiocratic way. I am a Gen Z and feel bad for my generation and the generations below me because their intelligence is slowly declining and I see it everyday. This executive order is accelerating the decline and our descent into Idiocracy.

Don't rewrite history! Learn from it instead. If you don't like how white people treated Black, Native American, Irish American, Japanese American, etc.. people back in the day. Then be part of the solution. Do better now. Keep the facts so we can be proud of how far we have come together. Don't pretend the hardships didn't happen and actively erase contributions of so many that aren't white men.

Years ago, I visited the Smithsonian and was in thrall to see the flag of the War of 1812 being restored. I stood and watched the workers repair it with the dignity it deserved. Shame on the current administration for trying to kill our history.

The Smithsonian and The National Zoo are treasures. I grew up in the DC area and my family members were frequent visitors. My Mom was a volunteer at the Zoo for many years. It’s important for our nation’s history to be shared honestly, not altered to fit a biased view of the truth. This institution belongs to all, not to a few people with an altered version they want to sell for their own agenda.

When I visited the Smithsonian in 2017, the exhibits were honestly really incredible. As a history major in college, I believe it's important to present our history as authentically as possible, and Donald Trump's attempts to hurt the Smithsonian is incredibly disturbing.
