Urging the City Council of Seattle to Officially Recognize Lunar New Year 2024

The Issue

As an Asian American, one among the estimated 135,000 residing in Seattle, I find immense cultural and personal significance in the celebration of the Lunar New Year. This event is not just a day on the calendar but a deep-rooted part of our identity and heritage. The year 2024 marks the Year of the Dragon - a symbol that carries great importance in our culture.

Seattle is known for its rich diversity and inclusivity, with Asian Americans making up approximately 14% of its population (source: U.S Census Bureau). Despite this significant demographic presence, our most important cultural celebration is yet to be officially recognized by our city.

The recognition of the Lunar New Year as an official celebration by the Seattle City Council before February 10, 2024, would not only honor this significant portion of its citizenry but also enrich Seattle's cultural landscape. It would provide an opportunity for all residents to learn about and participate in these vibrant traditions.

We urge you to consider passing a resolution and/or a proclamation recognizing Lunar New Year 2024 - The Year of The Dragon - as an official citywide celebration. Your support will affirm that every culture within our diverse city is valued and respected. Please sign this petition urging the Seattle City Council to recognize Lunar New Year 2024.
