I'm a former alumni of Oakland high School class of 2001 and thanks to my teacher Ms strong I learned to get over my fear of water and actually be a very good swimmer and now I'm teaching my child how to swim. My point is having this pool open in the community enriches everyone lives and is a benefit for students and the community in general. Please reopen the pool.
This pool not only is used by hundreds in the community, but has supported thousands of Oakland High students over the years. It is not exaggeration to say that thousands of kids only know how to swim because of this pool. It's an easy fix and not a huge investment which will have a great impact!
Swimming is SO good for the minds & bodies of Oakland residents. Water fitness works for many body sizes and abilities. Swimming has been the single most important part of my path back to health after disability. With Oakland public pools limited during COVID I finally gave in and joined a private gym for the pool - but that is a privilege many don’t have. Please make this pool accessible again. There are so few pools for so many people, and it’s quite far to travel to other pools. We’re so close to having this valuable youth & community health amenity. Please figure out how to make it happen!
Not everyone in Oakland has easy access to spaces to learn to swim. This is a small effort that can make a HUGE impact on so many folks--youth & elders alike--that need a way to do low impact movement & learn a new skill.
As a stressed-out college student, I depend on the pool to decompress and keep my mental health afloat. I don't see how Sac State can keep increasing our tuition/fees, spend millions on the football team, and yet not have the funds to keep the only tiny pool on campus open.
My daughter uses this pool to stay healthy both mentally and physically. I was quite disappointed to learn they are planning on taking this away from her. With all the hype about the Well and healthy living, you’d think they would provide a way for students who are unable to to run/play ball sports to exercise. Swimming is wonderful for those who are unable to walk because of an injury or disability. As a physical therapist, I used the pool to help many of my patients, including those with musculoskeletal injuries, neurological disease, and developmental disabilities. Please reconsider this!
Please keep the pool open. Having lap swimming available to your community is one of the most effective ways of keeping that community healthy - both mentally and physically. I swim as part of my exercise routine, and I am a physical therapist. I know how much I benefit from being in the pool. I also can see a big difference in my patients who have access to a pool. The benefits are too numerous to list. Please reconsider. Thank you.
