I live in a rural area of South Carolina, which is a major dog dumping ground. We see all breeds, but hounds are constant, especially during hunting seasons. Shelters, rescues, and even private citizens who are taking in strays are overwhelmed by the number of dogs that have been abandoned. These poor animals are subject to starvation, injury, and diseases. Almost all of them have not been neutered or spayed, which contributes greatly to the homeless dog population. Dogs play an important part in our society- their intelligence, love, and empathy is second to none, and no dog deserves to spend it's life afraid, cold, injured, or starving. The state of South Carolina needs to do better as far as enacting laws that will protect dogs, and punish their negligent owners. A dog is a living, empathetic, loving creature - not an object.
This is a shame. I just recently adopted a former hunting dog that is great with my other hound dog I got as a puppy. They play hard. I hope the trauma of living outside without food or water is behind him. I love my dogs with all my heart. They are part of our family.
We adopted one of these neglected and abused hounds three years ago. He has the sweetest soul, but unfortunately has some long term issues because of the abuse and neglect.
As a lifelong animal advocate and professional dog trainer, I recently leapt this law regarding it being legal to abandon “hunting dogs” in South Carolina.
Not only outdated and unethical, anyone in political power needs to take action to stop this immediately. I will call on my representatives to do so and hope that everyone who sees this does the same.
As a person who use to own horses myself, I could never understand why they have to suffer under the hands of people who want them to suffer and have no empathy!
I have witnessed how a TNR program provides a reduction of ferrel cats on my own property. I believe that a campus surrounded by rodent infested fields could only benefit from a natural IPM (integrated pest management) program by having a few mouser’s hanging around.
If only every person who thinks Big Lick is wonderful would see what actually happens to these poor sensitive and intelligent horses when people who supposedly love them deliberately torture them ...
this doesn't just happen naturally -- humans do it.
So tired of hearing about this for so many years and
yet they still get away with it.
