Brand new Bristol resident here as of Jan’25, and I’ve been to concerts at both the harbor and RWU. They don’t even compare. The sense of community, tradition, and the heart and soul of a small town are 1000% evident when you go to a concert at the harbor. But none of that exists at RWU. Is parking easier? Sure, but everything else suffers by holding this concert at RWU. It felt so cheap and cookie cutter to attend the concert series at RWU and it really doesn’t feel like ‘Bristol’ compared to the spirit and vibes you feel when attending at the harbor.
The negative impact on local businesses the year the concerts were moved to RWU was huge. We as business owners need the Town's support to improve our conditions, not to adopt measures that are detrimental to local businesses. On top of that, the concerts at Independence Park are a beautiful Bristol tradition. The location is gorgeous and easily accessible for everyone. It would be a sad mistake to move the concerts permanently to RWU.
My biggest issue with this decision is cars vs. parking. Sure, old location didn’t have much parking, but many many people walked or biked to concert. With new location, it’s completely unsafe to walk or bike, forcing more cars on road.
The concerts being at Independence park has been a tradition for years with my family and many others & it needs to stay this way! So many of Bristol’s long time residents including my family have always walked downtown for the concerts and just the atmosphere of the water being right there and the local businesses is something I’ll always cherish forever!
Moving the concert to RWU once was already a major change. The atmosphere was different— it lacked the heart and soul that Independence Park brings. This location is more than just a venue; it’s a walkable, accessible space for everyone to enjoy. Relocating the concert again wouldn’t just impact the spirit of the Bristol 4th of July celebration; it would also hurt local businesses that rely on the foot traffic. Independence Park offers something for everyone—whether it’s enjoying the concert, or simply taking in the beautiful views while listening to the music. Moving it would take away an experience that’s truly irreplaceable.
We go to almost all the concerts downtown during the 4th of July. When it was moved to Roger Williams University we went once and did not enjoy the location. Please return the concerts to Independence Park and keep the small town feel. There's nothing like watching the sunset behind those flags, grabbing a bite to eat from Portside to take with you to your seat, and for many spending the day downtown shopping before the concerts. Why ruin a good thing?
Please don't ruin this beloved tradition. It's not just about the actual concert. It's about the whole community experience and the atmosphere of where it's held. The bay, the small businesses, the bike path for walking or riding your bike to the venue, the ability of people's children being able to walk from the concerts to the carnival safely, all of it together is WHY it's so awesome!!!! this decision will ruin that!!!!
It isn’t even the concerts that matter. It’s having the concerts in the heart of our town and the patriotic, restorative lifeblood that flows into the community. This decision was a mistake, let’s not compound that mistake by not fixing it immediately.
We moved to Bristol four years ago, and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I love this town and the community vibe that it embraces. However, with the recent news that the Bristol concerts will no longer be at Independence Park… that was a blow. If you need any help with this cause, please reach out to me. Thank you for all your hard work. Let’s go Bristol!
I fell in love with the town of Bristol, Rhode Island quite a few years ago and part of the allure was a sense of community, especially surrounding Independence Day events most specifically the two week concert series at Independence Park. Please do not take that away from us. Thank you.
