Normalize 3rd Party Family Building in Healthcare

Normalize 3rd Party Family Building in Healthcare
The Issue
Our goal is to improve health outcomes for families built through third party reproduction. We want to make the conversation around third-party reproduction more comfortable for all by requesting these options be added to medical intake forms under family history. We are requesting that the word "other" be replaced with donor and adoption. This change will help to provide families with optimum, qualified cost-effective care.
According to data via the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, and the Human Reproduction Journal:
- Approximately 3,452 women use frozen donor eggs each year.
- Approximately 2,413 women use fresh donor eggs each year.
- If you use a fresh donor egg in the US, there's a 42.7% chance per IVF cycle start that the fertility treatment will result in a singleton birth.
- If you use a frozen donor egg in the US, a 35.2% chance per IVF cycle starts that the fertility treatment will result in a singleton birth.
- As for sperm donation, the numbers range from 30-60,000 births per year.
In addition, 2% of our population is raised through adoptions. In 2017, over 25,000 donor eggs and embryos were used, resulting in approximately 7000 transfers (which doesn't always result in a live birth). Please note that the actual number of people born through egg, sperm and embryo donation is not required to be recorded at this time.
When Lori Metz, LCSW, CCM, BC-TMH, spoke with moms of donor egg babies, this was a topic that came up often, particularly when it comes to normalizing their child's medical history. This has struck a chord in Ms. Metz for many reasons, significantly since it impacts individuals' physical and mental health and their parent(s).
There were 2 webinars held to discuss this topic:
- Normalizing Third-Party Reproduction Webinar - July 2021
- Normalizing Third-Party Reproduction Webinar - November 2021
We want to thank all of those who participated in these webinars, especially Barb Collura of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, Dr. Serena H Chen, Camille Guaty, Lena Ridley, Jennifer Maas, GoStork, Patricia E. Hershberger, Ph.D., and Hayley King.
There are many paths to parenthood, and this initiative is to support all of them. We hope that adding these options to medical forms it will enhance the medical intake process and will normalize this necessary option for many, but it will also significantly improve medical care for these amazing families.
Sign this petition if you support including family building options like adoption and third-party reproduction (donor eggs, donor sperm, donor embryos) on medical intake forms.
