I used to live in Coney Island a year and a half ago. I love Luna Park and the businesses around it. It’s also an extension of one of the first theme parks in America called Steeplechase Park built in 1897. Walt Disney visited Steeplechase park and studied it for inspiration for his own parks. In the 1960s Fred Trump ( yes, Donald Trumps father) bought and tore down Steeplechase Park to build condos, which he was unsuccessful. Let’s not make the same mistake of selling that area to billionaires again… They don’t care that people need jobs or how much people treasure what they are about to destroy. All they think about is how much money they can make for themselves.

Coney Island is a National Treasure and should be protected as such. Allowing a casino to rob the residents of Coney Island's past, present and future would be a travesty. Coney Island is a family friendly destination as well as a popular field trip spot for NYC school kids. Demolishing the amusement parks will not only deprive the children of this experience, it will cripple the New York City Aquarium's income, (as school trips and tourist's admission fees provide money to keep this non-profit funded and open). Casinos routinely operate with the goal to keep their visitor's INSIDE THE CASINO, providing them with amenities and distractions to keep them spending their money only at the casino. Fred Trump tried to bulldoze this iconic community once, and he failed. We, the community of Coney Island are here to say NO CASINO! Furthermore, the economically vulnerable in Coney will be further harmed isolated further when the small mom and pop stores go out of business and the big corporate companies come in and raise prices. What about providing new jobs, you ask? Skilled labor will come from outside of the community, as we currently do not have card dealers, pit bosses and the like. The part time, minimum wage jobs that may be offered will give community members a false sense of security as the casinos will target their wages as potential income, and these workers will inevitably end up worse off than they were before they got the job. It happened in Atlantic City, and it happens in Vegas, go ahead and fact check it. Casinos only profit the big money corporations and their owners, not the people who visit them. Everyone knows "the house always wins", it's how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The residents of Coney Island deserve to keep their home and their community a vibrant vacation (and staycation) spot, bringing in hundreds of thousands of tourists a year to this gem of a neighborhood. If you know Coney, you LOVE Coney, it is a living, breathing, vibrant community that spans generations, is socially and ethnically diverse, and is the heart and soul of Brooklyn.

Coney Island is a destination for thousands and their children every day in the summer. There's nothing else like it in NYC. I brought my nieces last year and they had a blast. It must be preserved! Sincerely, Margaret Stix

This is my home, and we grow children and society. We do not need casino. Who wants to play can go in the specific places and not where children and people live. Thats a very bad idea and we need to save our neigberhood, we need more parks, playgrounds Thats not the best for our society

This area has been my home for a number of years and I do hope for the same for my child to be able to grow up into. Having a casino in this area would do a lot more harm than good. Like many have mentioned, this neighborhood is very family orientated and having a casino in this area makes 0 sense.

These tall towers will shadow all the trees and gardens in Tudor City. Is it really worth sacrificing what makes New York so special? Its character, its charm, its old neighborhoods filled with history and charm? Once it’s gone, we don’t get it back.

I've lived here with my family for over 15 years, and I've seen how this neighborhood has grown and changed. First with my parents and now with my own kids. There are many families who come live here to raise their children because of this area. There is the River School on 35 street. There is St. Vartan's park on 36 street. Building a casino would be extremely detrimental and unsafe to our beloved home as this will attract all kinds of unwanted visitors. There will be continuous loitering, and many more petty crimes such as robberies and burglary and homeless people on the streets. Money isn't everything. Our safety and lives are just as important. Not to mention all the noise and congestion this will also bring. Casinos should be built in commercial areas away from homes. Please don't build a casino here and ruin my home.

My focus is on the people congestion. Just in the short corridor on 2nd Ave between 39th St and 42nd St, approximately +1,900 new apartments will open up in 2025-26, between the Pfizer Building office conversion, the 300 East 42nd St office building conversion, the new residential building at 729 3rd Ave, corner 39th St. and the 85 apartments opening up in the new Turken House at 300 East 41st. This translates to a guesstimate of 2,965 total new residents when considering single and double occupancies. This is just what I know of. There will be office conversions on 3rd Ave between 39th-42nd Streets as well. Plus new buildings opening up in the lower 30s along 2nd and 3rd Avenues. This area is finally becoming a real neighborhood. However, Freedom Plaza claims it will create “thousands” of jobs. This is very scary. We will no longer be a neighborhood. We will become a carnival. A circus. A Times Square. This is not quality of life. This is strictly a huge bonanza for the developer.

I own 2 properties in the area and my tenants who have young children love the current neighborhood because it’s quiet and safe. We do NOT need a casino in a residential neighborhood. It will drop the value of my properties in addition to degrading the quality of life for its residents.

This area is more than just a home to thousands—it’s the headquarters of the United Nations and a thriving community. The idea of adding casino traffic here is beyond reckless. Pro-casino economic arguments simply don’t hold up. This is already a vibrant area, and a casino won’t bring meaningful financial benefits. Instead, it will degrade the quality of life for residents and negatively impact the ability for ambulances from the area hospitals to reach and provide critical care. That our politicians need a petition to recognize the absurdity of this proposal is absolutely mind boggling.
