STOP THE ASHCAKE ROAD LANDFILL

STOP THE ASHCAKE ROAD LANDFILL
The Issue
Stop the Ashcake Road Landfill Expansion – Protect Our Community!
A new construction and debris landfill is being proposed in the heart of our community—putting our health, homes, and heritage at risk.
If approved, this “expansion” would bring more industrial waste, noise, and pollution just steps from our neighborhoods—threatening our air, water, property values, and the protected wetlands and wildlife that surround us.
The landfill owner is on record, originally promising in 2017 that this land would be used only for dirt excavation—not for waste disposal. Now, they’re attempting to go back on that promise for the second time. This same project was unanimously rejected by the Hanover County Board of Supervisors just over two years ago. Yet once again, the owner is pushing to build a second landfill beside the existing 80-foot-tall one, which already needs to be capped.
This isn’t just an environmental issue. It’s a threat to:
- Our quality of life
- Our historic communities, like Brown Grove
- And the well-being of residents, the majority of whom rely entirely on private well water
We can’t afford to let this happen—not now, not ever.
Speak up. Show up. Protect what matters.

Who is Impacted?
The proposed expansion will directly affect Hanover County residents, particularly communities like Brown Grove, Bailey Woods, Cheroy Woods, Mount Hermon Farms, and other surrounding areas. Families will face daily disruptions from traffic and loud industrial activity. More importantly, the potential contamination of air and water supplies threatens the well-being of many of our neighbors and their families relying solely on well water. The current landfill's own reports include existing samples of heavy metals and known carcinogens that belong no where near our homes.
What is at Stake?
If this expansion is approved, our community will be stuck with an even larger industrial waste site for decades, right in our backyard. This will not only lower property values and degrade our environment but will also destroy irreplaceable history and disrupt natural wildlife habitats - including bald eagle nests in the area.
Why is Now the Time to Act?
The current landfill is nearly full and was always expected to be capped, not expanded. Instead, the owner is seeking approval for another landfill on the same site, and county officials are currently reviewing the proposal. If we don’t speak out now, decision-makers may assume there is no opposition.
We Request:
- The Hanover County Board of Supervisors REJECT this landfill expansion proposal.
- Protection of our families, homes, heritage, and future.
- Transparent and meaningful engagement with residents before any further actions.
- Investment in alternative, environmentally responsible waste management solutions that don’t harm residential communities.
Our community’s health, safety, and future must come first. Let’s stand together to protect Hanover County, Brown Grove, and the surrounding community from the long-term impact this new landfill would cause. Together, we can stop this project and preserve our homes, heritage, and environment for generations to come.
