As a proud Chicagoan, I love that my neighborhood is full of people from a variety of backgrounds, including immigrants from Mexico, Poland, and South America. My heart aches when I think of my neighbors being subjected to Kristi Noem's racist, anti-immigrant DHS ads aired locally on WGN and nationally on NewsNation. These ads, which label and stigmatize immigrant communities, have the potential to instill fear and division, making my neighbors feel unwelcome in the place they call home.

In one version of the ads, Secretary Kristi Noem says: "Child molesters. Rapists. Murderers. These are just a few of the illegal alien scumbags who have been fined, imprisoned, and deported thanks to President Trump." In another, she threatens: "If you come to our country and break our laws, we will hunt you down."

This violent, xenophobic rhetoric has no place on our airwaves. Chicago is a city built by immigrants. Our streets echo with diverse languages, our businesses reflect multicultural entrepreneurship, and our communities cherish the international threads that make our city's fabric so unique. Immigrants contribute immensely to our local economy, and studies show they are less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens, contradicting the narratives promoted by these inflammatory ads.

It's imperative that WGN and NewsNation, as influential broadcasters in Chicago and across America, take a stand against such divisive rhetoric. We urge them to reconsider airing advertisements that undermine the rich diversity of our city and the contributions of our immigrant communities.
