The Issue

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of the largest IT companies in the world, is reportedly engaging in illegal and unethical practices that are severely harming employees and their families.

More than 12,000 employees have reportedly been laid off in recent quarters. These are not just numbers—they are individuals who have given 5, 10, even 15 years of service to the company, helping build TCS into a global leader. Instead of being valued, they are being discarded. Many of these layoffs are happening without proper severance packages, without adequate notice, and in violation of basic labor laws. This is not only unethical but may also be illegal. Families are left without income overnight, facing EMIs, children’s education fees, rent, and basic survival costs.

As if mass terminations were not enough, TCS has introduced a harsh 35-day bench policy. Employees who are not assigned to billable projects within just 35 days are at risk of losing their jobs. This policy creates fear and insecurity in the workplace, reducing employees to mere numbers on a spreadsheet rather than human beings with dignity and aspirations.

On top of this, more than 600 lateral hires across India remain in limbo due to indefinite onboarding delays. These professionals resigned from secure jobs and trusted TCS’s offer letters and joining dates, only to be told—sometimes on the day of joining—that their onboarding was “deferred indefinitely.” No timeline. No compensation. No support. For them and their families, this has meant joblessness, financial strain, and psychological distress.

Behind every layoff, every unfair policy, and every delayed onboarding is a family whose life is being turned upside down. These actions by TCS are not just corporate decisions; they are violations of trust, ethics, and the dignity of labour.

We, the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), call upon:

Tata Consultancy Services to immediately halt all layoffs and withdraw the 35-day bench policy.
TCS to honor its commitments and provide a time-bound onboarding schedule with compensation for delayed lateral hires.
The Ministry of Labour & Employment and the Government of India to investigate the legality of these layoffs and ensure compliance with labour laws.
Stronger safeguards to be introduced to protect IT professionals from arbitrary terminations and exploitative corporate practices.
Job security in India’s IT sector is already fragile. If such practices are allowed to continue unchecked, no offer letter will be trusted, and no long-serving employee will feel safe.

Employees are not disposable. They are the foundation of the IT industry, and their rights, dignity, and livelihoods must be protected.

We urge all IT professionals, their families, and concerned citizens to sign this petition. Together, let us hold TCS accountable and ensure fairness, transparency, and justice for employees.
