All Non-Medical SCCC Students Should Receive a P for the Spring 2020 Semester
The Issue
This petition is in regards to the Spring 2020 semesters at Suffolk County Community College. This petition states that for all non-medical programs (i.e., Nursing and Veterinary Technology) that all students in all other programs (i.e., Liberal Arts, Biology, Chemistry, History, Communications, etc.) will automatically receive a P in all classes. Students have the opportunity to receive an A or B based on the class’ syllabus, however, there would be no possibility to fail during these semesters.
These are unprecedented times. For the first time in the modern era, we are facing a pandemic. Long Island is badly suffering during this. Many students are essential workers, are taking care of their parents or grandparents, some even are parents, and some are even on the front lines working as EMTs. The added pressure of maintaining “good” grades while many are worried about keeping patients and even family members alive is extremely overwhelming. We, as students of Suffolk County Community College, paid for our educations not knowing that this was going to happen. Those who paid for it through FAFSA have the possibility of losing it next semester if they fail. That should not happen during an event like this.
We as a country are trying to not only adapt, but survive. These times are not for worrying about academia, but worrying about how will we be able to flatten the curve and eventually stop coronavirus.
