Save the Manatee in the Silver River

The Issue

Prompted by the tragic death of a 5-month-old manatee calf by a speeding boat, we find ourselves compelled to act. This incident has deeply touched our hearts and represents the crucial need for rapid action. This tragedy wasn't an isolated case - motorized boats routinely and defiantly refuse to respect the established no wake zone in the Silver River, from Ray Wayside Park to Silver Springs State Park, Florida.

Increased enforcement of existing regulations by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) could help mitigate these dangers. According to Fort Myers News-Press (Jan. 15, 2025) "Watercraft manatee deaths were up in 2024 as 96 sea cows were hit and killed by vessels in the Sunshine State." Without immediate action, this figure is likely to increase.

Our petition calls on the FWC and DEP/Silver Springs State Park to consider prohibiting motorized boats on the Silver River from Ray Wayside Park to Silver Springs State Park. If a full prohibition is not feasible, we request more consistent enforcement of no-wake restrictions to better protect manatees and ensure the safety of all aquatic life in the area.

Population growth and development have already placed significant pressure on Florida's manatees. We must react, or we face losing them forever. Your support for the enactment and/or enforcement of stricter regulations on motorized boats could ensure these gentle creatures' continued survival.

Therefore, we urge you to sign this petition. Let's help save our precious manatees from unnecessary harm. Your signature could be the difference between life and death for these magnificent creatures.

*we are not asking for donations, just signatures to support this effort. Thank you!
