Enact better online safety and protection for Tumblr users
Enact better online safety and protection for Tumblr users
The Issue
Tumblr has no effective measures with which users can protect themselves from harassment and threats. We cannot block people to keep them from seeing our content, we cannot keep our posts from being reblogged without our permission, and the reporting mechanisms for harassment are not thorough enough. We should not have to fight so hard to protect ourselves.
Things like this are what give people the idea that the internet isn't real life. The Internet is a space of interaction and it is as real as anything. Treating our safety online with such flippancy is appalling and it is irresponsible. Tumblr has a responsibility to its users and to society, and that includes taking our safety seriously. By doing so, and by cracking down on harassment more seriously, Tumblr would send a strong message - what happens on the Internet is real, and it has consequences.
I invite Tumblr not only to implement real and effective security measures, but also to reach out to its users and the communities within it, especially those who understand how to construct safe spaces, in order to build a safety policy that is inclusive and cognisant of intersectional issues.
