To the state of Oklahoma: Improve storm safety standards for schools.
To the state of Oklahoma: Improve storm safety standards for schools.
The Issue
On May 20, 2013, many homes and buildings were destroyed in Moore, OK, and some died. Some who had been in underground shelters actually drowned (from a nearby pool's water, if the Weather Channel's report was accurate). Worst of all, children were among the fatalities, as two schools were directly hit by the F5 tornado. The children had gone into a designated safe area, what was essentially a concrete hallway, which proved to provide inadequate protection.
I know we can't have every home in every city of Oklahoma have one, the expenses would just be too high, but no cost is too high for our children. It is my belief that any future rebuilding, remodeling, or construction of new schools - either in Moore or elsewhere in Oklahoma - should have underground storm shelters located on school grounds, equipped with water drains to counteract flooding.
