Fishers Island was at one time part of Connecticut. In 1879, it became recognized as part of New York, despite its proximity to Connecticut, and Connecticut's claims to the island that date back to John Winthrop, Jr. in the 1600s, as stated in colony's Charter. Fishers Island has many more connections to Connecticut than it does to New York.
