Soco: Keep Oil Exploration out of Africa's Oldest National Park.

The Issue

Virunga National Park is Africa's oldest national park. But now, it is in danger of becoming Africa's newest Oil Field.

Virunga National Park is home to about 218 mammal species, 706 bird species, 109 reptile species, and 78 amphibian species. It has an estimated population of 20,000 Hippopotamuses-one of the largest hippo populations in the worls. Virunga is also notably famous for its collection of rare Mountain and Eastern Lowland Gorillas. Some 200 Mountain Gorillas are believed to live there, as well as a some small populations of Eastern Lowland Gorillas. In addition to Virunga's habitats and wildlife, the park also holds a large human population. Lake Edward-one of Africa's Great Lakes-provides as a freshwater source for the local people. The people living in Virunga have kept Virunga a safe place for centuries. Now, however, British Oil Company, Soco, plans to begin Oil Drilling in Virunga. Soco believes that Oil Drilling in the Park could help the local people- but even Soco believes that Oil Drilling in Virunga could lead to some major affects on the people, wildlife, and habitats. To prevent Oil Drilling in Africa's Oldest National Park, please sign the petition (1000 signatures needed). For Virunga!
