Review the allocation of points awarded for the IELTS English exam for Skilled Migration to Australia

The issue

Proposal in detail

Review the allocation of points awarded for the IELTS English exam for Skilled Migration to Australia so that candidates with

1.  a minimum average IETLS score of 7 with a minimum of 6 in each component (Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading) are awarded 5 points;

2. a minimum IELTS score of 7 in each component (Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading) are awarded 10 points;

3.  a minimum average IELTS score of 8 with a minimum of 7 in each component (Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading) are awarded 15 points;

4. a minimum IELTS score of 8 in each component (Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading) are awarded 20 points

Background

The current system of allocating points for IELTS English testing is unfair and discriminatory.

It fails to consider fairly an applicant’s English ability.

Many people who sit the IELTS exam fall just below the target score and are required to re-sit the test in order to obtain the required points score.

The current points allocation system, inconsistency of test results and the lack of open and transparency in the IELTS exam leaves the system open ot the allegations of corruption and abuse, designed to force candidates into having to re-sit the exam at considerable cost.

By providing a more flexible and fairer points  allocation system the problem faced by candidates is minimised.

Currently there are two thresholds in allocating points: A minimum of 7 in each component (10 points) and a minimum of 8 in each component (20 points)

The proposed system of points allocation is fairer and more balanced,
