Reaffirm Geneseo's Commitment to SAA and Condemn Dr Everett's Scheduled Lecture "Against 'Sexual' 'Assault' 'Awareness'"

The Issue

Professor Theodore Everett, of the Philosophy Department, is planning to give a talk entitled "Against 'Sexual' 'Assault' 'Awareness'" on Monday, April 22nd 2013 from 7-8:45 PM on the SUNY Geneseo Campus. While we recognize Dr. Everett's right to give the talk, we ask the College Administration to condemn his position and reaffirm their support for sexual assault awareness and for victims seeking assistance for sexual assault. We believe the talk is irresponsible and to the detriment of the college community, where there are survivors of sexual assaults present. Students who have met with him have said his talk will center around his belief that sexual assault is not a big issue in the United States and Geneseo and that the statistics are overblown. He also stated to these students that a woman "is able to tell" if someone is a danger to her. The link to this petition will be sent to administration officials, and we ask that students of SUNY Geneseo sign it to show support for continued sexual assault awareness on the SUNY Geneseo campus and victims of sexual assault.

I want to emphasize that our President, administration, and students have worked tirelessly to fight sexual assault on the SUNY Geneseo campus. We are incredibly proud of all the progress we have made. Professor Everett's views, as shown by this petition, are his own and no one else's. The response to this petition shows that our community here at SUNY Geneseo supports sexual assault awareness and the victims of sexual assault, and we are incredibly proud of our school for it.
