Appoint Richard "Crazy Legs" Colón as a National Puerto Rican Day Parade board member

The Issue

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced on Thursday, February 13, 2014 that he is ousting more than half the leadership of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade Inc. for financial mismanagement and is reconstituting its board of directors. As an act of good faith for the future of this institution we petition that the Attorney General consider appointing Mr. Richard "Crazy Legs" Colón, a legendary dancer and cultural icon of the Rock Steady Crew as a board member of the National Puerto RIcan Day Parade. Crazy Legs represents a new generation of Puerto Rican born and raised in the United States. In 2003, he was presented with the Source Youth Foundation Image Award, received the AARTS Award from the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund, and was honored as the National Godfather of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Day Parade. In 2004, RSC was honored at the first annual Vh1 Hip Hop Honors. Crazy Legs is an international ambassador of the arts and Puerto Rican culture. He has organized the Rock Steady Crew anniversary for nearly 25 years since 1991, a cultural celebration of hip-hop. It’s not all business for Crazy Legs. When his schedule permits, he volunteers by teaching the dance form to youth in an effort to preserve the power and integrity of the movement he helped start and keep it growing for generations to come. He also participates in several community outreach programs and workshops. It was his dance program at the Point C.D.C. for young people in the South Bronx that garnered him the “New Yorker of the Week” Award from NY1 TV in addition to various non-profits throughout New York City such as El Puente and Aichhorn Residential Center. In addition to being a cultural ambassador for Puerto Rico by starting in 2013 Puert Rock Steady an offshoot of his Rock Steady Anniversary event. Puerto Rock Steady will raise money to bring work and educational programs to Puerto Rico. With his network and resources Crazy Legs serves as a great example of leadership that the National Puerto Rican Day Parade needs.
