Work with residents
The Issue
For years the elderly and working class residents of Sunset Village mobile home park have been made to live with irradiated/polluted water, raw sewage back ups, abandoned houses, crumbling streets, few street lights and no fire hydrants. Our rents have been increased our rebates were discontinued and the lot fee's are now nearly $1000 per month. (They were less than $700 three years ago.) The original owner went bankrupt rather than do the repairs. He gave Loyola University ten million dollars rather than invest in our safety. Now that it is in receivership, the remaining residents have partnered with a local church to become self owned and do the necessary repairs. But it seems some powerful forces in government and investors would rather see us all gone so they allow these horrible (and illegal) conditions to continue in an effort (that's working) to drive us all out. We have mortgages on our homes and the price of moving them is out of reach for most of us. So were trapped between living under horrible conditions or walking away from our only investment. Hundreds of families have had their childrens lives and their finances decimated as a result. The owners (MB Financial and Lincoln Financial) won't even come to the table to hear our offer. Worse still MB Financial holds mortgages on our houses with six figure balances and high interest rates and then auctioned off empty houses for pennies on the dollar incentivizing their being moved out making the property just that much more untenable.
There's no way people could be made to live under these conditions in any other instance except one where there was a hidden agenda or interest in seeing us gone.
