Apologize to Asante Cotman and Stop Discrimination!
The Issue
17-year-old Asante Cotman was suspended from Charles City High for wearing high heels at school - see the news story here: http://www.nbc12.com/category/195973/video-landing-page?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=6799928
The principal of the school claimed that his beige high heels were a "distraction" to the other students and she promptly gave him a three-day suspension. This issue is compounded with the fact that the principal has not made an effort to give Cotman the work he is missing while out of school.
The suspension is a clear double standard, considering that girls can and do wear high heels to the school, according to Cotman. Please, sign this petition and give voice to the continuing issues of gay rights and gender stereotypes. By signing this petition:
1. We are asking that Charles City High officially apologize to Asante Cotman for suspending him for wearing high heels to school.
2. We are asking that they help him make up for the work that he missed during his suspension.
3. We are asking that the school create a rule that protects children from being singled out and punished for a behavior that is tolerated for others at school (i.e. Boys shouldn't be punished for wearing an article of clothing if girls are allowed to wear it, etc.)
