Bioware And EA: Please release a final patch for Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3
The Issue
The Mass Effect trilogy is coming to a close with the release of the final story-based DLC pack for Mass Effect 3. It has been a tremendously successful and monumental series, earning the respect of the gaming industry and selling millions of copies worldwide. Mass Effect is one of the most solidly-consistent game series of all time, and its engaging storyline and memorable characters make it one of the most personal and replayable games ever made.
Mass Effect is so close to perfect, but it does have its flaws. There remain several bugs in each game that range from minor to game-breaking. Low-resolution world and armor textures are present in each game which cause the series to already look dated. In addition, fans are concerned about the future of Mass Effect 3's multiplayer component and Mass Effect 2 and 3's DLC verification system, as they are both heavily reliant on EA's Origin service and servers. It is well-known that EA does not support their games for more than a few years, and we are afraid of what will happen when EA starts shutting down Mass Effect servers.
BioWare has an incredible community of fans that love the series dearly, and we have generated lists of bugs and inconsistencies within the games. Modders and artists have found ways to import their own custom textures into the game to make the world and characters look absolutely outstanding. Gamers are more than happy to host their own private servers that will offload the multiplayer support from EA's servers, to allow for future multiplayer access once EA decides to stop supporting the games.
As a dedicated fan of Mass Effect and a member of the BioWare community, I formally request that EA and BioWare consider putting forth the effort to release a final patch for each of the Mass Effect games that will solve the remaining bugs in the game and add high-resolution textures as an add-on pack. In addition, BioWare should consider removing the requirement to verify DLC ownership with EA's servers and consider releasing private server hosting tools.
I realize that it may be impossible to include high-resolution textures on all platforms, due to hardware restrictions, but they should at least be released on the PC platform so that gamers with adequate hardware will be able to play the game with the highest graphical fidelity. I also realize that not all bugs and inconsistencies may be able to be corrected easily. However, with this final bit of development effort, the Mass Effect series can be brought to the state of near-perfection which it and its fans deserve.
