Approximately 7000 men and women are diagnosed with anal cancer each year. With early detection and proper treatment, patients have good chances for recovery. Because of similarities to cervical cancer, many of the most qualified and capable specialists for the treatment of anal cancer are gynecologists.

As reported in the New York Times, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) recently changed the definition of a certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist to prohibit their Diplomates to treat men except in extreme circumstances. Despite protests from some gynecologists who specialize in the screening and treatment of anal cancer, the ABOG has refused to amend the definition to allow gynecologists to treat anal cancer in men.

Denying cancer patients access to the most qualified practitioners based on gender is morally untenable. The ABOG should permit their board certified gynecologists to use their expertise to save people’s lives regardless of gender.
