November 2013

Victory

When thousands of people join together to fight for what's right—change truly does come. Six months ago I started this campaign asking Abercrombie & Fitch to offer an expanded range of sizes after I heard CEO Mike Jeffries’ disparaging and harmful comments about plus size people. Tens of thousands joined our movement and told Abercrombie & Fitch to embrace consumers of all sizes and on November 6th, 2013 they announced they will begin offering plus sizes in their spring line! I'm elated to see that good does win out if you are willing to fight for it. Thank you to everyone who lent their voices and their stories to this movement. When we work together anything is truly possible and we've seen that with this victory!

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”-Mike Jeffries Abercrombie & Fitch CEO

Anyone who’s been to Abercrombie & Fitch in the last few years has probably noticed that they don’t carry XL or XXL clothing for women and their waist sizes for men leave room to be desired. Why? Because, they don’t want overweight young people wearing their brand!

According to this popular teen clothing retailer "fat kids" will never be a part of the “popular crowd” and will therefore never be a part of their brand.

With two of Abercrombie’s biggest competitors, H&M and American Eagle, both offering XXL sizes for men and women; why would they possibly want to exclude average sized people from their brand?

Abercrombie’s attitude towards plus-sized teens derives from CEO Mike Jeffries. Jeffries has publically made inflammatory statements towards overweight teens and his desire for them not to be associated with his brand.

As a young adult who suffered from an eating disorder, through much of middle and high school, I remember looking at the ads for Abercrombie & Fitch or combing the racks and not seeing anything that fit me. As silly as it seems, as a kid, it made me feel worthless to not be able to wear the "it" styling that everyone else was wearing. For the 30.54 percent of teens that struggle through weight problems they know my sentiment. But now I know that I am not worthless; infact I am FULL of worth and it's time we show young people across the world that they are too! Instead of inspiring young people to make healthy choices and better themselves, Mike Jeffries and his company have told them they will never be good enough. Well he is wrong.

Mr. Jeffries owes young people an apology, because contrary to what he may believe, whether you can fit into Abercrombie or not, you are beautiful. It's time Abercrombie & Fitch to embrace that beauty! Please join me in this fight by adding your name to this petition and asking Abercrombie and Fitch to embrace the beauty in all sizes by offering XL and XXL sizes for women and men!

    1. Update.

I am humbled, moved, and simply blown away at what we have done here. Over 75,000 people have made their voices heard. We have been featured in the headlines of nearly every major publication in the country and we have created a movement.

On Tuesday May 21, I had to opportunity to sit down with Abercrombie & Fitch senior staff members. Our goal was to come together in solidarity to discuss how we can improve the company's lack of diversity in their clothing and branding.

I was able to deliver the 2,000 double-sided pages of my petition into the hands of Abercrombie executives. That petition represents over 75,000 names, 75,000 faces, 75,000 VOICES that have demanded to be heard.

I am pleased to announce that this week Abercrombie & Fitch will be announcing what it plans to do as a company to increase it's diversity and inclusion.

I am confident that this time next week I will be writing to you to declare victory.

      We will be heard.

I am excited to announce that early this week I will be meeting with the executive staff of Abercrombie & Fitch to deliver the tens of thousands of names on our petition and discuss how we can come together to make a positive change in their company's policy.

Please stay tuned for more information.

When people come together to make their voices heard, change does come! We are becoming an incredible example of that!

    4. Mike Jeffries Releases a Statement...That Falls Completely Flat.

      Benjamin O'Keefe
      Petition Organizer

Mike Jeffries has finally ended his silence in the wake of our global campaign against the harmful and discriminating practices of his company and the truly disheartening statements of the man himself. But, when he finally spoke his words fell drastically short. His statement,

"We [Abercrombie&Fitch] are completely opposed to any discrimination, bullying, derogatory characterizations or other anti-social behavior based...body type or other individual characteristics."

is not only a lie but it is truly nothing short of a ploy to deter the tens of thousands who have have stood up against Abercrombie from the truth: Abercrombie does discriminate, because not offering clothing options clothing options for a larger sized audience IS discrimination and the words of Mike Jeffries ARE that of a bully. Well Mr. Jeffries, we are not going away. It's time you issue a true apology and it's time you start creating products that embrace people of all sizes!

Zackary from Maine sent a message to me today that really touched my heart. Just one of the THOUSANDS I have received and the THOUSANDS more that have been left in the comments of this petition. Check it out and let it remind you of the importance of our message!

      "Hello Benjamin,

My name is Zackary and I just wanted to thank you for starting this petition about Abercrombie. I think what you are doing here is truly great. The message that Abercrombie is sending to teens today is horrible...This petition personally means a lot to me because when I was in middle school all the way up to my freshman year of high school I was the person who was picked on for being overweight...Since then I have lost a lot of weight and reached out to the other people who were in the same position as me... When I signed this it made me truly happy to see that you and others are going out of their to make others feel accepted..."

      Thanks Zack!

THE MANIPULATION OF YOUNG MINDS STEERED BY PHYSICAL APPEARANCE AND AN APPEAL TO THE "COOL" IS BULLSHIT & ABUSE. LIFE IS MORE THAN FITTING INTO A SIZE 2 OR WHAT PEOPLE PERCEIVE YOU AS. BE SELFISH, BE INDIVIDUAL, BE FORWARD THINKING, AND LOVE ONE'S SELF ABOVE ALL.

I worked an an FE college and see teens struggle with their image and trying to fit in- and feeling awful when they dont- every day. This kind of profit driven manipulation is disgusting.
