The Issue

Too many children are suffering due to poor diets directly linked to a lack of nutritional education. The profound impact of this neglect shows later in life, with many facing slowed development, heightened risks of diseases, worsening allergies, and chronic conditions. This is a nationwide concern that needs to be urgently addressed to ensure the health and wellbeing of future generations, which will have a tremendously positive impact on the population and the economy.

The reality is that many parents simply aren't equipped with the right information. Sneaky marketing by food companies misleads them into choosing unhealthy options for their children and themselves.

In the UK:

  • By the time children leave primary school, over 1 in 3 are overweight or obese.
  • Ultra-processed foods now make up more than half of the average 7-year-old's daily calories
  • Malnutrition (both under and over) hospital admissions have roughly doubled since 2007
  • Fewer than 1 in 10 teenagers meet the recommended fruit & veg intake
  • Over 30% of parents are unsure as to how much food their children should eat

Dietary habits formed in the first 1-3 years of life shape lifelong eating patterns. Poor diet is linked to higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, poor immunity, and dental decay. The lack of nutritional education for parents in the UK is neglect.

By requiring all new & expectant parents to attend compulsory nutrition classes, we can empower them with the knowledge they need to make informed dietary choices. These classes would cover essential topics on child and maternal nutrition, identifying misleading food marketing, and promoting healthy eating habits that start from pregnancy and extend into the early years of a child's life.

Countries like Sweden have already implemented similar programs with remarkable success, and it's time for us to follow suit. The future health of our children depends on proactive education now.

Together, we can call upon our local and national governments to make these classes a standard requirement. This initiative will not only foster healthier families but also help curb long-term health care costs associated with diet-related diseases.

Let's ensure every child starts life with the best chance for a healthy future. Please sign this petition to advocate for mandatory nutrition education for parents today.
